RIVERTON RACING CLUB. SECOND DAY. ' TOWN MAJOR SUCCESSFUL. SQUATTER WINS STEEPLECHASE. ■ FINE JUMPING WITNESSED. SPRINT , TO ASSEMBLE. The Riverton Racing ' Club’s annual meeting was continued yesterday in beautiful weather. Rain over the week-end had softened the track and it was, in holding order, being well cut up by the end of the day. The racing was keen and interesting and some good finishes took place, bun the public were again astray in their selections and not one favourite was successful. The steeplechase was a really fine event and the jumping of the placed horses reached rather a high standard, particularly that of the winner. Although the conditions were so pleasant, the attendance was well below that of last year and this allied to the fact that some large dividends were returned did not assist the club to keep up its returns. The gate receipts amounted to £846 8/6 compared with £1,153 13/6 last year, a drop of £307 5/-. The totalisator figures totalled £15,013 against £19,243 last year, a decrease of £4,230. Dr. C. H. Gordon and his fellow stewards worked with a will to make the day a success, and their efforts were deserving of a better fate. The programme was kept well up to time and was concluded only a few minutes behind schedule. All are to be congratulated on the improvement. Mr G. R. Banks and his secretarial staff dealt in capable fashion with any demands made upon them. Despite the prevailing conditions, the club has continued the privilege of free luncheon tickets and refreshments to members and visiting trainers and owners and this has been greatly appreciated. Mr A. D. Mclvor was in fine form at the barrier and Mr A. Macaulay recorded his decisions promptly and accurately to the satisfaction of the general public. Mr G. N. AN EXCELLENT STEEPLECHASE. TRACK IN HOLDING ORDER. A RIDER SUSPENDED. For the High-weight Handicap Night Rose was elected favourite, having one hundred and ten friends more than Membo with Good Gift seventy-two friends away. The pool read at £1274 against £1742 last year. From a good start Royal Limond, Membo and Good Gift were smartest out from Bitractor while Slim Jim was last away. Passing the stewards’ stand there was some crowding, Membo appearing to be the sufferer. Round the top Bitractor and Royal Limond led Good Gift. The field raced in pairs down the back, the order being Bitractor and Royal Limond, Membo and Good Gift and Night Rose and West Dome. Night Rose moved up round the top and Slim Jim was making up ground. Royal Limond, Membo and Night Rose turned for home on terms ahead of Slim Jim and Good Gift. Membo compounded at the distance and Night Rose and Royal Limond drew away. A stirring finish saw Royal Limond (J. Kerr) hang on to beat Night Rose (N. Trillo), by a neck with Slim Jim (L. Hunt), two and a-half lengths away, half a length ahead of Membo (D. O'Connor.) Then came West Dome (F. Langford) and Good Gift (H. Anderton.) Time, 2min 19sec. Royal Limond scored in meritorious fashion. He led all the way and stoutly resisted a strong challenge by Night Rose. It was a case of consistency rewarded. Night Rose did great work over the final half-mile, but found the winner just too good. Slim Jim finished solidly after being in a rear position over the first six furlongs. Membo found his weight too solid. He was galloped on during the race and walked away slightly lame with a gash on his near hind leg. At a meeting of stewards held after the race, H. Anderton, rider of Good Gift, was suspended for 14 days for interference with Membo shortly after the start. Jack A Dandy was favourite for the President’s Hack Handicap, having ninetyeight friends more than Ozone with Miss Redowa thirty tokens away. The pool totalled £1836 against £1736 10/- last year. A great start saw the field race in line for some distance, then Milliner, Red Royal, Tea Urn and Jack A Dandy singled themselves out. After going two furlongs Jack A Dandy took up the running from Ace of Hearts, while Traction joined in followed by Milliner and Red Royal. Around the top Traction was clear from Jack A Dandy, Ace of Hearts, Red Royal, Miss Redowa and Cetchela. Traction was first to turn for home from Jack A Dandy, Red Royal, Tea Urn, Miss Redowa and Cetchela. Jack A Dandy had enough at the distance and Cetchela put in a run with Red Royal. A great finish saw Cetchela (G. Barclay) beat Red Royal (S. Wilson), by a neck. Traction (J. Winder) was a similar distance away, a length ahead of Thornton (W. McEwan). Then came Ozone (T. Metcalfe), Jack A Dandy (L. J. Ellis) and Tea Urn (N. J. Dwyer). Time, Imin 20 4-ssec. Cetchela finished too strongly for the others and she was splendidly handled by G. Barclay who is riding well at present. Red Royal went a fine race and so did Traction who made a bold bid. Thornton only came on the scene in the straight and finished solidly. Jack A Dandy failed to stay on and so did Tea Urn. Both had every chance. For the Flying Handicap Master Anomaly was an easy first fancy, having just on three hundred friends more than Full Fling with Assemble eight tokens away. The total was £lBB2 against £3316 10/last year. Master Anomaly was last to leave and Aspiring, Assemble and Arikinui were first out. Master Anomaly quickly made up his ground and at the four furlongs had joined Arikinui in the lead from Full Fling and Aspiring. Around the top Master Anomaly was half a length ahead of Arikinui with Full Fling and Aspiring next. Master Anomaly just led Arikinui into the straight, followed by Assemble, Full Fling and Waving Corn. Assemble challenged at the distance and Master Anomaly had enough. In a good finish Assemble (N. J. Dwyer) had too much in reserve for Arikinui (S. Wilson) and beat him nicely by a neck. Waving Corn (B. Brodie) was half a length back with Master Anomaly (T. Metcalfe) two lengths away followed by Aspiring (F. Ingram), with Full Fling (L. J. Ellis), last. Time, Imin 18 3-ssec. Assemble was not all out to win, and hers was a good effort. Arikinui made a bold bid after making all the running and his turn cannot be far off. Waving Corn was last into the straight, but finished with a great run. Master Anomaly was last away but quickly made up his ground. It took a good deal out of him and he faded out in the straight. The bracketed Steeton and Cough were the heaviest supported at the meeting, having three hundred and fifty-one tokens more than High Speed with Toreador sixty-five friends away, fifty-two ahead of The Smuggler. The pool totalled £1986 against £2527 10/- last year. From a good start Corn Queen and Steeton were slow to move and Cough and High Speed led out from Barn Door and Toreador. Barn Door and Cough led Solmar, Toreador, The Smuggler and Corn Queen into the back and this was the order at the five furlongs with Steeton next. Cough met with some interference and lost her position and Toreador, Solmar, High Speed and Corn Queen was the order at the far turn. High Speed took charge coming around the top from Toreador, Corn Queen, Steeton and Solmar, The Smuggler and Totolomai being next. High Speed led Toreador, Corn Queen, Steeton, Solmar, Totolmai and The Smuggler into the straight where Cough was again in trouble. At the distance Totolomai put in her claim and The Smuggler was going great guns ahead of Steeton. The Smuggler (F. Ingram) momentarily had charge opposite the stands, but Totolomai (R. Jenkins), finished too strongly and beat him by one and a half lengths. High Speed (T. Metcalf) was half a length back, the same distance ahead of Steeton (W. McEwan). The next to arrive were Toreador (G. Barclay), Barn Door (C. Pope), Cough (L. J. Ellis) and Takaka (J. Cotton). Time, Imin 48sec. Totolomai won on her merits and scored in convincing fashion. The Smuggler put in a good run over the final stages, but found the winner too good. High Speed was indifferently handled, but Cough was most unlucky. She was twice badly checked. Toreador failed to see it out.

The Easter Handicap saw Charmaine installed as first fancy, having forty supporters more than Wingatui. Royal Saxon was one hundred and twenty away, thirtyone ahead of Red Sea. The pool was £2047 10/- against £2124 10/- last year. A good start was effected, Charmaine, Speed Light and Royal Saxon being first to break the line. Turning out of the straight Charmaine had charge from Speed Light, Night _ Maid, Royal Saxon and Wingatui. Into the back Charmaine was clear from 'Night Maid, Camisader, Speed Light, Royal Saxon and Wingatui. There was little change down the back except that Red Sea, Salmo Salar and Town Major moved up at the far turn. Around the top the field bunched, with Charmaine holding the lead from Royal Saxon, Night Maid, Camisader, Red Sea, Salmo Salar and Town Major. Turning into the straight Charmaine ran out wide and caused Royal Saxon to lose a little ground, while Red Sea got a run on the rails. At the distance Charznaxne still had charge, but challenges were coming on all sides. Red Sea on the rails, Salmo Salar wide out and Town Major were all going well. One hundred yards from home Red Sea was gone and Town Major put in a great run. A short distance from the judge Town Major (W. Hogan) shot out and was going away at the finish to win by two lengths from Charmaine (G. Barclay), who was half a length ahead of Royal Saxon (D. O’Connor). Salmo Salar (F. Ingram) was a similar distance away, followed by Night Maid (N. J. Dwyer), Wingatui (C. Hughes) and Red Sea (L. J. Ellis). Time, 2min 2sec. Town Major fully deserved his win. He covered a good deal of extra ground coming around the top and finished in determined fashion. It was his first success for Mr J. A. Smaiil. Charmaine made a bold bid, and but for running wide turning for home would have been much more difficult to dispose of. Royal Saxon was unlucky. Red Sea looked as if she was going to win at the distance, but the soft going on the rails stopped her.

Valves was the public’s choice for the Riverton Steeplechase, having one hundred and six supporters more than Squatter, with Maungamoe thirty-five tokens away, twenty three ahead of Snawfall. The total was £1554 against £1726 last year. Taramoa, Radiac and Squatter led out from a good start, but Diamond Jack led over the first fence from Squatter, Koremata and Maungamoe. The favourite, Valves, fell at this fence and interfered with Matu. Squatter took up the role of pacemaker from Diamond Jack, Kapuna, Snowfall and Koremata. All were jumping well,. but Math lost some ground at the gorse fence entering the back stretch. There was no alteration round to the water jump, but Matu lost his rider here. Squatter, Kapuna, Snowfall and Diamond Jack led into the back, but Snowfall hit hard and lost some ground. Koremata refused at the double and was pulled up. Coming to the post and rail Squatter and Kapuna were well clear of Radiac, Diamond Jack and Snowfall. At the sod wall Radiac tipped out and brought down Taramoa. Squatter was well clear over the last fence from Kapuna, Diamond Jack, Snowfall and Maungamoe. Squatter (V. Langford) was not seriously troubled to beat Kapuna (L. Hunt) by six lengths, with Diamond Jack (Mr F. C. Pratt) four lengths back, ten ahead of Maungamoe (F. Langford). Snowfall (D. O’Connor) was the only other to finish. Time, smin 30 4-ssec. It was a really splendid contest and Squatter in particular gave a great exhibition of fencing.' His win was richly deserved. Kapuna should be improved by the race and his w'as a good effort. Diamond Jack did not jump as well as he did on the first day, neither did Snowfall. Radiac was a tired horse when he fell.

The Wallace Hack Handicap saw Hot Tea installed a firm favourite, having four hundred and seventy-three tickets more than Banner Boy, with Crubenmore forty-one tokens away. The pool totalled £l9OO 10/against £2719 last year. Cetchela was slow to find her feet from a great start and Crubenmore, Banner Boy, Some Form and Vinegrove were first to break the line. Racing down the back Vinegrove and Crubenmore were at the head of affairs from Rombeau, Some Form and Hot Tea. There was little change around the top except that Leading Boy had run up handy and Rombeau joined Vinegrove. Into the straight Rombeau and Vinegrove just led Crubenmore, Leading Boy, Hot Tea and Baby Bliss. It was a good race at the distance, but Leading Boy (A. Leckie) then drew out and he was kept going to win by four lengths from Some Form (J. Cotton), with Hot Tea (W. McEwan) a head away, a head in front of Vinegrove (W. Cooper). Then in a heap came Rombeau (G. Barclay), Meitui (C. Hughes), and Cetchela (T. Metcalf). Time, Imin 31 3-ssec.

Leading Boy gave A. Leckie hk first winning ride and over the final furlong it was never in doubt. It was a great race for second. Hot Tea looked to be gone at the distance, but he came again and narrowly missed second place, Some Form having enough in reserve to hold him off. Vinegrove’s was a fine effort, but weight found Crubenmore out.

Spirited betting marked the Monowai Handicap and eventually Charmaine was made' favourite, having one hundred and eight supporters more than Habit, with a drop of one hundred to Some Toff. Red Boa was sixty-six tokens further back. The total reached £2533 against £3351 last year. A fine walk-up start was effected, Apache and Red Boa being first away from Habit and Some Toff. Into the back Red Boa was just showing out from Apache, then coming Money Mine and Some Toff. They raced in this order all down Lae back, with Charmaine tailing the field. Around the top Some Toff and Charmaine made forward moves and the order into the straight was Red Boa, Apache, Money Mine, Charmaine and Some Toff. Apache cried enough at the dktance, where Red Boa was still going strongly. Charmaine came with a solid run and Money Mine headed Apache. Red Boa (C. Pope), however, held off Charmaine (L. J. Elik) and beat her by half a length. Money Mine (C. Hughes) was two lengths away, followed by Apache (F. J. McKay), Habit (S. Wikon) and Some Toff (F. Voight). Time, Imin 47 2-5 sec. It was a great performance on the part of Red Boa for he was always in the lead and was running on at the finish. The going was greatly to hk liking. Charmaine had a good deal of ground to make up over the final half-mile, and it was a fine performance to get where she did. Apache had every chance, but failed in the final dash. Habit again disappointed, while Some Toff appears to have temporarily lost. form. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. The following are the acceptances for the third day of the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting:— ■ OREPUKI MAIDEN HANDICAP, £125. Six furlongs.

EASY FOR BLACK DUKE. (Special to the Times.) Christchurch, April 6. The weather was perfect for the opening day of the meeting at Riccarton and the track was in splendid order. The large crowd saw some fine racing. Antrim Boy was made an even money favourite for the Kildare Hurdles. It was a one dividend race as Amorist was scratched after arriving on the course,' his trainer having decided to Reserve him for the second day. Carinthia stripped very big, but the rest were in fine order. Aberfeldy and Pangolin led over the first two hurdles, then Pangolin took charge from Aberfeldy and Antrim Boy, with Carinthia tailed off. With seven furlongs to go, Antrim Boy displaced Pangolin in the. lead and after that he was always a winner. Aberfeldy was the only runner that might have troubled him'. He

had got to within two lengths of him at the last fence, but he fell and Antrim Boy continued home alone. Carinthia finished a bad last. It will be remembered that he did the same a year ago, then came out on the second day and won. I. Tilson, rider of Gala Day, was taken to the hospital. He was unconscious, suffering from concussion. He was discharged almost immediately and returned to the course. The big field in the Autumn Plate got away in line. Sharpthorn was the first to poke his nose out, but at the end of two furlongs Night Recital, Sharpthorn, Juniper and Adelphi were at the head of a bunch, while Parysia, after getting away well, was drifting back. She went short in her preliminary. Entering the straight Night Recital, Royal Apiphora, Sharpthorn, Juniper and Adelphi were in line, with Shatter going great guns on the rails in behind and looking for an opening. Sharpthorn and Juniper singled themselves out below the distance and settled down to a great ■ battle. Sharpthorn prevailed by a neck, with the fast finishing The Bailiff a length away, just ahead of Shatter. Had The Bailiff and Shatter been fortunate enough to get better passages, they would have beaten Sharpthorn. Night Recital and Airladdie finished fifth and sixth. If there was not a high class two-year-old in the Champagne Stakes, it at least can be said of them that they were a well conditioned and good looking lot, and all of them moved well in their canters. Golden Wings and Cricket Bat were heavily supported as compared with the rest of the field, any of which would have paid a good price. Golden Wings and Cricket Bat were soon in front and Golden Wings, after opening up a gap, went on to win very easily from Cricket Bat, who just beat Fair Weather for second money, with Esteem, who finished very' fast, a head away fourth. The rest were beaten off. Had Fair Weather drawn an inside position at the barrier the same as Cricket Bat did, he would have got second money. Nothing, however, had a chance with the winner, who outclassed his opponents. By Lackham from Megalo, he is a good sort. Most of the youngsters in the Russley Plate were very green and ran accordingly. The first to show out was Waiwene, with Idolize in close attendance. At the distance the 5 Jibs overweight on Waiwene began to tell its tale, and Idolize, hard ridden, gradually drew out to win by nearly two lengths from Chief Cook, who beat Waiwene for second money in the last stride. Azalea, who finished fast, was a close fourth, with the rest beaten off. On looks there were no likely Derby winners in the field. With the exception of Limerick, who walked a trifle short behind, and Full Feather, who went very short, the starters in the Great Easter Handicap moved well in their preliminaries. The start was beautiful. Palermo, Autopay, Arrow Lad, Great Star, Chrysology and Blue Paper fought for positions in the first furlong, with Limerick, Full Feather, Silver Paper and Compris at the other end. At the end of three furlongs run in 34 2-ssec Blue Paper was clear of the leading bunch, who had been joined by Charrneuse, with Mount Boa coming fast from the backblocks. At the distance Blue Paper was gone and Charrneuse had a slight advantage of Great Star. After a battle to the post, Charrneuse got there threequarters of a length ahead of Great Star. Mount Boa was a head away, just a length ahead of Chrysology'. Then came Autopay', Jaloux and Limerick all in a bunch. At the end of three furlongs Limerick w’as standing up the leader about fifteen lengths and Full Feather was behind him. The winner got first place on her merits. Had she and Mount Boa been well placed early, it is hard to say which would have won, out they would have been well clear of the rest of the 'field at the winning post.. Palermo got away well from 'No. 1 position, but could' not hold his place, and Silver Paper, who looked lean and wretched, never threatened danger. Both finished well back. Coroner was made a good favourite for the Gimcrack Handicap. He got a good run, but Wise Choice and Grand Acre had him well beaten at the end of three furlongs. Wise Choice, who won very easily, was purchased at the auction after the race by Mr M. T. Corliss, of New Brighton. The Sockburn Handicap was the best of good things for Black Duke. He ran up to the leaders, Spoon and Ball Dress, after going four furlongs, passed them, and won under a pull. They were a well strungout lot. In the final event The Dove, Al Jolson and Bonrose led in line from the other three, also in line. Once heads were turned for home First Raid came through and, though chased by Meprisant, he never looked in serious danger of being beaten. True Shaft was a poor third, with Al Jolson a bad fourth. Meprisant works brilliantly on occasions, but so far this season he has not run a really good race, certainly not such as 14s work has represented him being capable of. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. CONSISTENCY REWARDED. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Sydney, April 6. Commenting on the Doncaster Handicap the Sydney Morning Herald says: “Sir Chrystopher’s victory was a just reward for consistency and a triumph for the Newcastle trainer, L. Cashman, who has been studying the horse’s peculiarities for many months. Sir Chrystopher which this year has won in four out of five starts, came last at the three furlongs post to first at the furlong post and sustaining a long gruelling run, won by threequarters of a length from that sterling performer, Mollison, which tried to win all the way. The time W'as only half a second outside Whittier’s 1924 record for the Doncaster.” Sir Chrystopher was purchased as a yearling for only 80 guineas. The buyer, however, was not satisfied and resold him to Mr H. R. Munro for 60 guineas. He has already won £6117 in "stakes. WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB. OPENING DAY. EASTER HANDICAP TO WHITE FANG.
