PASSING OF MELBA
THOUSANDS PAY HOMAGE.
THE FUNERAL SERVICE.
(United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 9.20 p.m.) Melbourne, February 26. Lying in state in Scots Church, Melbourne, the body of Dame Nellie Melba was viewed by thousands of people. The service began at one o’clock and lasted an hour. It was fully choral and was conducted byDr W. Borland, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Victoria. Among those present were representatives of the Federal and State Governments, consuls and musical societies, also leading public men and Mr O. L. Firth, the New Zealand Government agent. Tire oaken casket rested on a dais at the side of the pulpit almost hidden by magnificent wreaths. Ten thousand people gathered outside the church to watch the funeral procession move away. Interment was in the family vault at Lilydale Cemetery. BELGIAN GESTURE “AVENUE NELLIE MELBA.” Brussels, February 25. In token of Belgium’s gratitude to Dame Melba in connection with Belgium’s Red Cross work, a street in Brussels is being named Avenue Nellie Melba.
