NIGHTCAPS NOTES

CHILDREN’S SPORTS. (From Our Correspondent.) The Labour Day sports, which have been postponed front time to time owing to unfavourable weather conditions, were held on Saturday in the hospital grounds, when there was a good attendance of townspeople. Mr J. Magen (secretary? and an energetic committee kept things moving, and the band provided an enjoyable programme, which was much appreciated. The committee is indebted to the following donors of special prizes: .Mesdames Grant '(2), Rushton, Munn and Burgess; Messrs J. Kai-. Patrick, G. Taylor, J. C. Wilson, F. Boyle, T. Burgess, Purdue, Reed, R. Irwin, Matheson’s, Ltd., D. Sinclair, A. .Laidlaw, Cameron, Finn, A. Capitaneas and A. Prendeville. Following were the results: 'Miners’ Race: A. Prendeville 1, M. Committee’s Race: A. Prendeville 1, L. Magee 2. School Concert. For several weeks the teachers and scholars have been preparing the programme for the annual school concert. This took place on Friday evening in the Coronation Hall, when there was a large attendance. The various items were well received, and at the conclusion of the programme Mr V. R. Jamieson, on behalf of the committee, expressed his appreciation of the efforts of the staff and pupils in putting on such a splendid entertainment. The following programme was submitted: "The Sandman,” infants; '“The Boy and, the Bird,’’ pupils; pianoforte duct, Misses E. Brazier and J. Excell; “Song of the Clock,” infants; sketches, “Wanted, a Servant,” “Mr and Mrs Willis” and “Wedding Breakfast,” pupils; song, “Little Grandmothers,” girls; “The Prize Fight,” C. and J. Mason; dance, girls; sermon, “Mother Hubbard.” J. Thompson; song, “We are Seven,” infants; pianoforte solo, Betty Adcock; dialogue, "Selling a Dog,” boys; item by the “Coldstream Guards Band”; “Boat Song,” boys; “Witches’ Song,” girls; dance, girls; “Christy Minstrel Songs Around the Camp Fire,” pupils; recitation, L. Low; pianoforte duet, John Thompson and Melrose Sheddan; song, “Reapers,” pupils; recitation, “Just for Christmas,” C. Mason; and song, "Railway Train,” pupils. A dance was held afterwards, which was well patronized, and was enjoyed by all.
