WYNDHAM NEWS

(From Our Correspondent.) On Saturday afternoon, members-of tho Wyndham branch of the Band of Hope, together with a few adult supporters of the movement, held their annual picnic on Mr Andrew Howe's property, South Wyndham. The children had a most enjoyable outing. In additional to the usual programme of sports set down for such an occasion, Mr and Mrs Howe had swings and see-saws erected in the bush, which needless to say were well patronized. The most popular attractions, however, were rides on the pony and excursions through Southland’s only tunnel. Tea was served during the afternoon, and before dispersing ringing cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Howe. On Friday afternoon, at the invitation of Miss McCutcheson, instructress in baking, etc., at the Wyndham District High School, the mothers of the girls attending the school met together with them and had afternoon tea, with a view to letting the mothers see what work had been accomplished during the year. The room was tastefully decorated for the occasion. A display by the dressmaking classes was also on view, and greatly admired. The Bible Classes attached to the Wyndham Presbyterian Church held their final social of the year on Friday evening, in the Sunday School Hall. Mr K. Crump presided, and under his leadership, a happy programme of games, etc., was carried through successfully. An appropriate address by the Rev. G. D. Falconer, and two recitations by Mr A. R. Scott, Redan home missionary, were attentively listened to-. The annual congregational meeting in connection with the Tuturau Presbyterian Church was held on Thursday evening, when the Rev. Robert Mackie (Mataura) presided over a large attendance. The rev. chairman gave an outline of the work of the various organizations in connection with the church, which indicated that these were functioning in a healthy manner. Mr William Muir reported on the Sunday School work, which was in a flourishing state. During the evening items were contributed by the Mataura choir, while a helpful address was delivered by the Rev. G. D. Falconer (Wyndham). The residents of Menzies Ferry have acquired a tennis court and have formed a Tennis Club, with Mr James H. Henderson, as president and Miss L. Fenton secretary. On Thursday evening in the presence of a satisfactory attendance Mr Henderson declared the courts officially open, and an enjoyable evening’s play was experienced. A dance was held a few weeks ago in the Public Hall to raise finance for the erection of the courts, and met with good results. Two of the factory assistants (Messrs Silk and Hill) were mainly responsible for the laying out of courts and erecting posts and wires, etc. After play had been concluded a dance was held in the Public Hall to music supplied by Mrs R. Erskine.
