MATAURA BOROUGH

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening and attended by the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and Councillors W. P. Thorn, J. W. Aitken, C. E. Rowe, G. Beaumont, J. Ingram, J. 11. Clarke, J. G. Sutherland, and W. Piercy. An offer was received from Mr P. Larking, Mataura, to deliver gravel to any pbint within the borough at the /ate of 2/6 p<jr yard, any royalty to be paid by the borough, and if the borough surfaceman assisted he would supply at 2/- per yard, with screening to Ilins, at 3d per yard extra. —Referred to tne Works Committee.

The Minister for Justice wrote acknowledging the council's letter explaining the necessity for a courthouse at Mataura in which he stated that a courthouse would be erected when funds were available. In reference to the supply of electricity to the borough the manager of the Southland Frozen Meat Company wrote advising that in the event of the council favourably considering the offer of the Southland Electric Power Board to take over the whole of the reticulation system the company was not prepared to cancel the contract. It had, up to the present, fulfilled the requirements of the contract and would be pleased to consider the installation of a three-phase generator for a further term. Tho present contract expired in June, 1933 and the company would be pleased to discuss a further renewal. —The Lighting Committee was appointed to meet the company in the matter. The Unemployment Board advised that the subsidy of £52 for relief of unemployment in the borough had been approved, and also forwarded a copy of the rules for the functioning of local committees under the unemployment scheme. A local officer of a Government department would co-operate with the local committee in accordance with the rules and in compliance with the Treasury regulations. Upon the, formation of a local committee at Mataura the necessary books of employment forms would be sent. It was decided that a public meeting be held at an early date to appoint a local committee. The foreman of works reported on work done (luring the month of November as follows: —Gravelling Bangor Street . and Boundary Road, culvert put in on Boundary Road, patching River Street and footpath, drains and culverts laid in Mataura Terrace, Kana Street north bridge painted, ditches cleaned in Stuart and Lome Streets, four sewer connections and three water connections laid, tile drain laid in Wyndham Road, all streets in the borough graded, grass cut and channels cleaned in River, Albion Main and Bangor Streets, spoil carted to Sugar-of-Milk road and new Recreation Ground entrance. The Water and Drainage Committee recommended that a water trough be installed at the public pound at the saleyards and that seven loans to install water connections be granted.—Adopted. The Works Committee reported that the services of the extra surfaceman had been dispensed with; that application had been made for the Unemployment Board’s subsidy for £2 for £1 on the sum of £25 to be spent on relief work for the unemployed as follows: Forming and gravelling part of Devon Street, forming part of River Terrace, draining part of Seibourne Street and reforming part of Crawford Road; that the borough cottage had been inspected and that it required painting and papering and a bath and santitary connection installed. It recommended that the matter of the fence along the railway reserve be held over in the meantime. The report was adopted. The balance-sheet for 1929-1930 was received from the audit office without a tag.

A discussion took place on the present sanitary service which was to have ceased on December 31, adn it was agreed to extend the service until March 31. Before the meeting concluded the Mayor wished the council and staff the season’s greetings. The Deputy Mayor (Councillor Thorn) replied on behalf of the councillors, and the Town Clerk on behalf of the staff.
