MATCH AT GORE EASTERN-NORTHERN AND TOWN TEAM A DRAWN GAME ■ The annual Town v. Northern-Eastern game, played on the hostel grounds, Gore, yesterday resulted in a draw, the Town team being in anything but a winning position when stumps were drawn. The country team batted first and declared their innings closed at about five o’clock with .182 runs on for the loss of seven wickets. Town’s reply was a poor one and at the call of time the visitors were 100 in arrears with only four wickets to fall. L. G. Townsend, who is better known as a Rugby player, was top-scorer for the country team with a vigorously-compiled 96. The Wyndham man started shakily, but soon played himself in and gave a grand display of clean hitting. He was particularly severe on Keast and lifted him over the boundary for six on four occasions. Included in his total were six sixes and seven fours. Townsend was well applauded at the close of his innings which, although not altogether chanceless, was an invaluable one for the side. C. King, of Gore, gave the best display of batsmanship and shaped well enough to earn for himself a place in the Southland team this season. lie scored with a nice variety of shots and played like a batsman in form.

Beyond King and Townsend, the country batsmen shaped only fairly and gave little trouble. Town’s attack was not very effective, but it was made more or less impotent by the poor display of- catching and fielding. McGowan bowled best, although he did not secure the best figures. The Town innings, was far from being a creditable batting display. Most of the batsmen were all at sea on the concrete wicket and shaped accordingly.. Country scored a moral victory . and proved that in McKay and King they have at least two players worthy of representative honours.

Messrs L. Edwards and W. A. Olliver were the umpires: Scores: —
