NUMEROUS BREACHES REPORT OF PROHIBITION DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES OF SMUGGLERS (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Washington, December 8. The Prohibition Department’s report for the year ending June 30 states that gaol sentences aggregating over 14,000 years were imposed on violators of the Volstead Act, 6,678,000 dollars were collected in fines, 68,175 arrests were made, 22,405 gaol senttences were imposed out of i>4,085 convictions and 567 charges of corruption among Prohibition enforcement officials were investigated. In a very large proportion of the cases the charges were either absolutely disproved or dropped for lack of evidence, says the report.
Two million gallons of whisky were legally manufactured for medicinal purposes. Determined efforts are still being made to smuggle liquor into the United States from the sea, according to the report. One preventive officer, who recently returned to headquarters, said the progress of his men through the State sounded like the battle of the Marne, as so many rifles fired at set distances warned homefolk of their approach.
