Last evening the Government Meteorologist issued the following forecast: A slight anti-cyclone is passing to the north and a moderate depression is advancing over the Tasman Sea. Freshening northerly winds but a change to southerlies advancing over the southern half of the South Lsland during to-morrow morning. Seas smooth to moderate. Winds later backing to southerlies in the eastern Tasman. Seas smooth to moderate and weather fair to fine at first with mild temperatures but showers developing in districts with a westerly aspect and later extending along the eastern districts of the South Island.

A Press Association message from Gisborne states that the Taranaki Oilfields Company has started drilling at its new location, the report yesterday stating that the Waitange No. 1 well water supply installation was completed, drilled to 47 feet and cemented with 22-inch stove pipe casing at that depth in sandy, shale. All the equipment was running satisfactorily.

The monthly meeting of the Thornbury branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held last Thursday afternoon, the president, Mrs T. H. Anderson, presiding over 20 ladies. It was stated that £37 had been collected by members of the division towards the Cancer Research Fund. A euchre and dance evening had been held during the month to raise funds for this branch. A letter to all new branches was received from Mrs Jackson, the Dominion president. After the meeting a social hour was spent in music and competition, the following ladies contributing items: Song, Mrs J. McLean; violin solo, Miss A. Anderson. Mrs McFarlane played the accompaniments. The various competitions were won by Mrs D. Hillis, Mrs J. McLean and Miss V. Hillis.

Lambing percentages in the Central Hawkes Bay district this season were 10 per cent, below normal, according to tallies which have been made at shearing time on some of the larger properties.

Through the courtesy' of Mr.W. T. Johnston, Chief Postmaster, about 20 of the pupils from the Marist Brothers’ School were shown through the local telephone exchange yesterday afternoon. The boys were greatly interested in the explanations of the apparatus given by’ the operators and the mechanician, Mr Clarke.

Messrs H. & J. Smith’s Oup, which was donated to the Winton A. and P. Association for the best dairy cow exhibited, was won for the third year in succession by Mr W. Archer’s Jersey cow Aparinia Jewell. The handsome cup is at present displayed in a Tay street window of the departmental stores. An enlarged photograph of the wining Jersey cow accompanies the display.

A Press Association message from Christchurch states that three charges of breaking, entering and theft were admitted before the Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) by Leonard Gordon Hamilton, aged 22, a clerk. He also pleaded guilty to two charges of forging cheques and was committed for sentence on all counts. It was shown that the accused broke into three premises in the Regent Buildings after climbing on the roof.

A meeting of the committee of the Gore Boy Scouts’ Association was held on Monday evening. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr E. C. Smith, Mr W. D. Shelton presided. Representatives of the Gore Girl Guide troops were also present. Mr Darracott, of Mataura, submitted a proposal to stage the Mataura Amateur Revue Company’s comedy, “The Haunted Room,” on Tuesday', December 16, in the Princess Theatre, the proceeds to be devoted to the Gore Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements. It was stated that the comedy had been very successful at Mataura and those present had been lavish in praise of the high standard of the performance. After a discussion the offer was accepted and a committee was set up to arrange the necessary details. Mr Shelton was appointed secretary and treasurer.
