SPORTING

NOTES BY ROUNDABOUT.

Woodville meeting concludes to day.

Wyndham R.C. nominations appear elsewhere.

Trotting at New Brighton on Saturday.

Cattle Flat Hack Racing Club entries on Friday.

Gore Trotting Club handicaps are due to-morrow.

Winton Trotting Club handicaps appear on Saturday.

Dunedin Jockey Club first day weights on Friday.

The local track was.'in great order yesterday, and some interesting galloping took place on the outside of the course proper.

Celerity H with her trainer up went once round at a strong pace and continued on round to the six furlong post and came home from there in Imin 25 1-osec. She did her work nicely.

Pandoor (N. Trillo) and Johnny Phar (J. McChesney) went six furlongs, finishing together. They cut out the first four in 52secs and the full journey in Imin 22secs. It was a nice gallop.

Night Lark (M. McDonald) beat Steeton (E. Mackie) over five furlongs, run in 1 min S 4-ssec., the first three in 40 4-ssec.

Abbeville (W. Austin) was too good for Pan Royal (11. Stuck) over six furlongs done in Imin 23sec, the first four in ulsec.

The Rector (J. McChesney) just headed Rombeau (N. Trillo) over five furlongs done in Imin 8 l-osec.

Remindful (E. Ross) recorded Imin 23 sec. for six furlongs, the .first four- in 54 sec. She went well.

Miss Redowa (E. Mackie) was not ex tended to run half a mile in 59 l-ssec.

The two-year-olds Pandowa (M. McDonald) and a gelding by Balboa—Gunshy (J. Gray) sprinted three furlongs nicely.

The fastest piece of work for the season went to the credit of On Watch (F. Mullins! and Consono (G. Barclay) when they finished on terms over five furlongs in Imin ssecs, the first three in 36 4-ssec. It was a very fine piece of work, but the track was faster yesterday than at any other time this season.

Meinbo (F. Mullins) beat Sentinel Lad (G. Barclay) over six furlongs. The first four were done in 50 2-ssec and the full journey in Imin 18 2-ssec. Both went well.

Red Boa (M. McDonald) recorded Imin 24sec for six furlongs, the last three in 44 secs. '

Red Sea (W. Austin) ran five furlongs at a strong pace. She is coming on nicely.

Beacon Light hit out. well when doing a round at a strong pace.

Glenham Lark (F. Mullins) and Blue China (N. McLellan) wound up the clock to Imin Gsecs at the end of five furlongs, the first four in 54secs. They a-e a smart pair and are doing well for R. Bromby.

A nice bit of work was accomplished by Milliner (G. Barclay) when she recorded 51 3-ssec for half a mile. She is very well.

Battle Maid (W. Austin) concluded operations by running half a mile in 53secs. She did it well and has improved since Winton.

The entries for the Wyndham Racing Club’s meeting, appearing elsewhere a.i sent by our correspondent make pleasant reading. Christchurch, Washdyke, Wingatui and all the southern centres are represented and the indications at. present are that the club should have a good meeting. An entry of 21 for the cup is very good, and augurs well for the entry for the Invercargill Cup. An increase of 18 over last year's figures looks well and the club officials must feel well pleased. The following table is a comparison between last year’s figures and this year’s:— 1930 1931 New Year Hurdles . . 10 11 Trial Plate 21 23 Diggers Trot .... 24 25 Wyndham Cup . . . 15. 21 Mimihau Handicap . . 18 20 Presidents Handicap . . 13 11 Victory Trot . 16 IS Visitors Handicap ... 14 20 Totals 131 149 It is stated that no horse is looking better at Wingatui than Rin Tin Tin. When the weights appeared for the Auckland Cup it was generally conceded that Cylinder had been well treated, and he was immediately included amongst the possibilities. He is evidently, however, to be reserved for classic and weight-for-age events at the meeting, as private advice received by the Christchurch Press on Saturday from J. H. Jefferd stated that the three-year-old’s engagement in the Cup would not be continued.

The New Brighton sportsman, Mr J. Westerman, suffered a big loss on Friday night in the death of a. two-year-old colt by Rey de Oro from Doraldina, therefore brother to Daphne de Oro. The colt was running in a yard on the property of Mr J. Thomson at Upper Riccarton and had just been broken in. Apparently the youngster became frightened and attempted to jump a six-foot, fence, with fatal results. This colt had shown the greatest promise and was to have joined D. Bennett’s Addington stable.

The nominations received for the holiday meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club total 282, and represent 133 different horses. Last year the figures were 254 and 110 respectively. The nominations are good in each of the sixteen races and include all the best horses in training south of the Ashburton. Riccarton stables are represented in the list by the following: Amorist, Fresh Breeze, Spoon, Appeal, Compris, .Homecoming, Locksley, Pharaoh, Footfall, Topere, Lochlaggan, Haze, Meprisant, Invictus, Juniper, Kakara, Merry Peei, Night Recital, Proud Knight and Jael.

Mr G. Gould’s two representatives at Ashburton on Saturday, Pharaoh and Jael, showed promising form and gave prospective buyers a good indication of their abilities, says the Press. Both are exceptionally well bred and can be expected to improve with age and racing. Mr Gould has a number of young horses coming on, and this is his reason for submitting this pair and Galante, another three-year-old, by Paladin from Wink, at auction on Thursday. W. G. Hobbs has devoted a' lot of time to these young horses during the past twelve months, and their new owners will reap the benefit of the patient policy so far adopted with them.

Solwit created a very favourable impression by his decisive win at Ashburton on Saturday, and he bids fair to do further good, service for his owner, says the Christchurch Press.- His dam, Scotch Wit, was bred by the late Sir George Clifford, and is by The Ace from Scottish Star, by Clanranald from Safeguard, by Maxim, and was purchased in 192 G by Mr G. A. Kain, who bred Scotch Wit, and sold him privately as a yearling after the Trantham sales to Mr 11. Preston, who also secured, at the same time, a filly by Solferino from the Absurd mare, Blush, yet to race. Ramo, who also races in the same ownership, ■ is another of Solferino’s progeny and was bred by Mr Preston, who, with this pair and

Royal Love, has three useful gallopers to represent him during the season. Royal Love has been off the scene lately owing to being gelded, but he will rejoin the active list early in the New Year.

The nominations for the Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer Meeting fall far short of the totals of some previous years. The stakes are good enough to attract owners as in previous years, but it is noticeable that the South Island representation is very meagre. It is doubtful whether South Island stables have been so poorly represented for many years. The Auckland Cup nomination is especially disappointing, and the absence of well-known performers in Kingcraft, Terence Dillon, King Pointer, and others must detract from the big race as a spectacle. However, the nomination of the two South Island favourites, Wrackler and Harold Logan, will please southern supporters, and the presence of Logan Park will add interest.

In commenting on Saturday’s work at New Brighton, the Christchurch Press says: Bell Heather, who on occasions has shown a lot of promise at the trotting gait, was worked over a mile and a-half at New Brighton on Saturday, and she gave a pleasing display. Some Guy, Vagabond King, and a three-year-old by Guy Parrish —Penelope were worked a mile at a good speed, the first-named holding the others safe. Country King and Surprise Journey were visitors, and they were sent a mile and a half at a good strong pace. Great Glee, an improving trotter in A. E. Bussell’s stable, was sent a mile and a half, and Tamerlane and Jupiter went a similar distance without being unduly hurried. Willie Derby and Pearler went a mile and a half, being joined by Mercury over the last mile. The trio finished together. Erin’s Fortune raced over a mile and a quarter without being asked for anything special, and Wah was altogether too good for the young trotter, Biddy Parrish.

On Saturday morning Harold Logan and Pageant were worked at New Brighton after making.a,long trip from their Templeton headquarters. It is some time since Harold Logan raced on a grass track, but he is quite accustomed to the going, for he has won good races on the Auckland track. His effort on Saturday was good three-quarter pace work over a mile in company with his stable companion, Pageant. The Auckland Cup horse is in good order, and during the past few weeks he has given his trainer no trouble whatever.

Trentham stables, on present appearances, look as if they will have one or two useful two-year-olds before the season ends, says the special message to the Christchurch Press. To-day’s work suggests that the policy adopted of not hurrying them early in the season is going to prove beneficial. The gallops of Acorn and Saltspray, and of Oratorian and St. Roger, showed them to be a promising quartet. Most interest will naturally centre in Oratorian, for he is half-brother by Hunting Song to those good performers, Oratrix and Concentrate, and also he cost Mr R. J. Murphy the record price of 2400 guineas. Too often these high-priced yearlings do very little to recoup the original outlay, but. so far as Oratorian has gone, and that, of course, is not far yet, be has given every promise of turning out good. To-day he had his first real test, and although his two companions were doing it better at the finish, that could only be expected, for Oratorian has not been hurried. What pleased his trainer was the way he pulled up and the fact that the gallop had not unsettled him in the least. He behaved afterwards like an' old horse. Oratorian is a good-looking chestnut, generally regarded as the best colour for good descendants of Hurry On, and when he has finished growing he will be a very commanding horse. His stablemate, St. Roger, shows speed, which seems natural, seeing that he is from a granddaughter of The Welkin, but his sire also is a Hurry On horse, Roger de Busli. He also is a nice looking chestnut colt. Mr H. Murphy looks like having secured a bargain at the HOgns he gave for him at the Sydney sales last Easter. Acorn is a brown filly by Paladin from the Martian mare Hornbeam, dam of Sir Roy and Don Quixote. Acorn appears to have thrown back to the Martian strain, and although she has not done a great deal yet, she shaped very smartly this morning. Saltspray has not been hurried, but he also shapes promisingly. He is a brother to Mr Greenwood’s Ozone, being by Saltash from Aries, by The Welkin from the Hotchkiss mare Armigera. This is a very good family, to which belong the Melbourne Cup winner, King Ingoda, the Auckland Cup winner, Corinax, and the speedy Riccarton filly of some years back, Armlet.

CANTERBURY NOTES.

TRACKS IN FAST ORDER. SLEIPNER DOING WELL. HORSES FOR SOUTHERN MEETINGS. PHAR LAP’S SISTER. NIGHT MARCH FOR ELLERSLIE. (Special to the Times.) Christchurch, December 6. We have had our first patch of summer this week and it has been a pleasant experience. The grass gallops have got very fast, but they have not been in great demand. An Otago sportsman made an offer for Jaloux during the week, but the gelding was not for sale. All of Mr G. D. Greenwood’s horses are being worked the reverse way. This does not mean that all of them are going to race at Ellerslie. A select few will make the trip, but not all. Merry Peel who joined H. Donovan’s team about two months ago is coming on nicely. He is galloping well, but it will take some racing to bring him to the peak of his form. He will be one of Donovan’s team to do the Otago and Southland meetings during the holidays. Jordan has not been turned out yet, but he will leave Riccarton for his owner’s farm very shortly.

Juniper has rejoined W. G. Hobbs’ team. A big framed gelding he has filled out nicely during his long let up, and is now a gelding that any trainer would like to hate the handling of. Just in from the paddock he is big in condition. If he continues to thrive now that he has started work he will do well for he has a lot of pace, and when in work before shaped as if he would stay. His trouble was that like his dam Judith he would not train on, but always fell away to a shadow. Mr S. Barton has obtained permission from the authorities to train his horse The Rider himself without, having to take out. a trainer’s licence. The brilliant bay gelding has built up nicely while spelling and on Thursday he was responsible for a smart performance over half a mile. Whether his stamina will be any better now that he is built up remains to be seen, but- it is very doubtful.

E. Scoullar is keeping Lorette and Parysia busy and they are acquitting themselves well in their gallops. On Thursday they were sent seven furlongs together and they registered a very nice performance without being asked to do their best. The two-year-olds Chief Light and Irish Chieftain are in regular work, but they are not being asked to go fast. This appears to be wise treatment as both of them are growing fast. H. Nurse has hopes of racing Charmeuse during the holidays. She has done nothing more serious than trotting exercise on the lead during the last month. At first she continued to lose condition but during the last week she has become brighter in the coat and is putting on condition. Sleipner is doing solid work again, and is sprinting as well as ever he did. It will take more than bad luck to prevent him from winning a race during the holidays. He is a brilliant customer. F. D. Jones has made arrangements to take First Sight, Paquito, Solvent and Coroner to Ellerslie. All four are working rather well. Unfortunately Solvent has not any engagements in the two-year-old Classics either at Ellerslie or anywhere else. She is developing well and will be a nice mare.

T. Lloyd left for Woodville on Thursday with Gay Crest, Desert Song, Adelphi

and Royal Baby. After racing them at Woodville Lloyd will take this lot on to Ellerslie. Gay Crest was looking much better when he left here than he did at the N.Z. Cup meeting and so is Desert Song. Gay Crest who was light has built up and Desert Song who was big has hardened up. Both should race well in the north. Desert Song has a liking for soft tracks. Compris who cast a shoe a week ago and was lame when walking home has been a regular attendant on the tracks during the week and has not shown any signs of soreness. He has not been galloped on the grass, but has always worked on the plough. C. Emerson has an addition to his team in Gay Boy. The Gay Lad gelding is at present being used as a hack upon which to lead Lochlaggan. Later on in the season he will be tried over hurdles again. Lochlaggan has built up again and is much quieter than she was earlier in the season, and is getting through her daily task like an old stager. Fresh Breeze has been schooled over the big hurdles several times. A bold shouldered gelding, he is the type that one would expect to jump cleverly and well. He doesn’t however, as he is rather clumsy. He may improve with a lot of schooling, but it will take some time.

The pony two-year-old Knocklong has not got over her shinsoreness yet. She is doing trotting exercise, but as yet has not got back her old freedom. By the way she cannot be called a pony any longer. She is above pony standard and is growing still.

Phar Lap’s five-year-old sister Fortune’s Wheel was very light in condition when she joined Mrs Campbell’s team. Like her famous brother she is a chestnut, has plenty of size, and an easy going disposition. Already she is becoming brighter in the coat and is building up. She was in work as a youngster, but an accident forced her into retirement. During it she visited Polazel, and a yearling from her will be on offer at the Trentham sales. On looks she is perfectly sound now, and she may prove to be a good galloper, as she moves with great freedom, and has a long stride. The Ace —Red Hind filly Forelock com tinues to do well, and she won’t be racing long before she wins some money. There is not a great deal of her, but what there is shows plenty of quality. Pangolin is back on the tracks. His neck is still a little bit swollen, and he fell away in conditon but he is moving freely. E. Shaw who came to grief with this gelding is improving rapidly now, and it won’t be long before he is out of hospital. Old Count Cavour is working rather better than many people thought he was capable of doing. He is booked to start in the Auckland Cup and he will not be last. To date nobody has been, engaged to ride him in his engagements at Ellerslie.

Gustavo does not look as well as he diet before going to Trentham in October. Still he is bigger and more muscular than he was on N.Z. Derby day. Trainer T. H. Gillett would of course have liked to tackle Cylinder with Gustavo when the latter’s preparation had not been interrupted. Such things are all in the game however ano Gillett hopes to produce his colt in fairly good shape for the Great Northern Derby. He is not at all confident that Gustavo will beat Cylinder, but he is confident that he will run a better race than he did at Riccarton.

Te Awhina is back on the tracks. She is doing steady pacing and is not showing the slightest symptoms of lameness. It is satisfactory to state that she did not lose any condition while laid up. A. McAulay has Night March and True Shaft working well. They are not doing reverse work, as their trainer does not think it necessary after their' long spells at Randwick. He will depart for Ellerslie wtih them at the same time as the rest of the Riccarton horses. All of them have to go by a special horse train from Wellington to Ellerslie. Mr A. Louisson has not come to a decision as to whether he will race Night March in the Auckland Cup or not. The chances are that he will. No horse has won the Auckland Cup with such a weight as Night March has this year, that is 9.13, which is 81bs over w.f.a. for the distance. Nelson holds the weightcarrying record with 9.12 when he won his third Auckland Cup in succession. One of the greatest performances ever put up by a winner of the Auckland Cup was that of St. Hippo, who as a three-year-old carried 8.9 to victory. This was 141bs over w.f.a. He won so very easily that a few days later when he won the Great Northern Derby he was barred on the machine. The dividend was paid out on the second horse. In those days only one dividend was paid out in a race.

Red Heckle’s brother, who was gelded a fortnight ago, made such a quick recovery that he was back at work last Monday. He is just about, the most striking looking two-year-old at Riccarton. On their running in the Morel on Hack Handicap at Ashburton, Pharoah and Night Parade cannot be classed us good at. present. The start was very bad. Pharoah got ail the best of it, and next to him Night Parade had least to complain of, and both were beaten easily. After having had several races taken from him in the last few strides this season, First. Raid made good at Ashburton by winning the Wakanui Handicap. It was dogged persistance that carried him first past the post, and he was gradually going away from his opponents at the finish. Had the race been run over a mile instead of six furlongs he would have won easily. He used to be trained at Washdyke by his owner. Since the N.Z. Cup meeting he has gone into R. C. Keeper’s stable at Orari. Certainly he is a credit to his trainer, and it won't be long before he is again led in a winner. Owing to soreness Beau Geste has done very little fast work during the last fortnight. A gross gelding, this made him a little bit short of work for the Ashburton meeting. Thorndale has been on the easy list for some time owing to eoreness. A heavily topped gelding, he does not look capable of standing up to a thorough preparation again.

George Humphries met with no serious damage when he came off Craigavon at Ashburton to-day. When he was brought to the enclosure in the ambulance it was thought that, the lad had been seriously hurt. He was only having a ride, however, and when it stopped he skipped out of it so spryly that, everyone was relieved. Haze, who is engaged in the hurdle races at Wingatui, has not done any fast work worth mentioning, and so far he has no recent schooling to his credit. It will take some racing to get this gelding to the top of his form again. Many people had a good look for Eclair during the running of the Lairmhor Plate, but could not locate him. He has the reputation of being able to gallop very fast, a reputation that he so far has not earned. Carded as carrying his owner’s colours, emerald green and gold chequers, gold pleeves and cap, he could not be found. The reason was that his proper colours had not been brought to the meeting, and he carried the Ashburton trainer J. J. Lewis’ livery, chocolate and white chequers, chocolate cap.

The usual discussions are being held daily as to what will win the Auckland Cup. Naturally everybody here is basing an opinion on the form shown at the N.Z. Cup meeting. Everybody agrees that Night March, Concentrate and In the Shade, who filled the places in the Cup at Riccarton, were so very fit and seasoned that their trainers cannot possibly improve them for the Auckland Cup, indeed it is thought that'they will do well if they can produce them at Ellerslie as right as they were here. Night March and Concentrate had nothing to complain about as to their passages in the N.Z. Cup, but In the Shade could very easily have been handled with better judgment. This being the case, he may beat the pair in the Auckland Cup. Still, he will have others to defeat besides his conqueror in the Cup at headquarters, horses that must strip better than they did here. One of these is Star Stranger. If he has been worked thoroughly since he raced at Riccarton the old Martian gelding will be just about the hardest to beat at Ellerslie in the Cup. Cylinder is another that could easily strip better than he was. here. Also he is in well. A Derby vanner in at 31bs under w.f.a. would not need to be a champion to win the Cup at

Auckland. Another that should strip better is Count Palatine, and perhaps he will prove to be the most improved. Mr A. B. Williams’ elect and Count Palatine most certainly look the best prospects at Ellerslie on their condition and form at Riccarton. WOODVILLE JOCKEY CLUB. FIRST DAY OF MEETING. HEAVY MACHINE DECREASE. GAY CREST WINS PRINCIPAL EVENT. SPRINT TO TOXEUMA. (Per United Press Association.) Woodville, December 9. The first day of the Woodville Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held in fine weather. There was an appreciable falling off in the attendance of the public and the totalisator handled £11,328, as com-’ pared with £16,733 on the same day of last year. The principal event of the day was won by Gay Crest and the sprint event by. Toxeuma, both of which were favourites on the machine. • The results were:— MANGAATUA HURDLES HANDICAP, £l4O. MORGAN OUTPOINTS FAIRHALL. JUDGES DISAGREE. Wellington, December 9. Ted Morgan to-night outj>ointed Tommy Fairhall, welterweight champion of Australia, in a thrilling 15-round encounter. Morgan’s southpaw stance was awkward for Fairhall. Morgan was down for eight in the third round and only the gong saved him in the fifth, when he was virtually out on his feet as a result of a bombardment of right and left hooks. Morgan, by virtue of his better stamina, had the better of the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth rounds. The judges disagreed and the referee gave the fight to Morgan, who was cheered to the echo.
