On Saturday handicaps are due for the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting.

Hynanna, after racing much below his best' form, has been turned out.

Stealth’s new owner is Mr AV. J. Winterbottom, a leading owner in West Australia.

H. Wiggins’ mounts at Woodville to-day will be Maui, High Faintin', Golden Shadow, Flute and La Poupee, if started.

A. E. Ellis contemplates riding at the Auckland meeting during the holidays, and he will handle First Sight in his engagements..

Vendome is again in works at Addington after a short spell, and looks in fine order. The Australian-bred mare requires a lot of work.

A prospective buyer was making inquries a few days ago concerning Full Feather, but it is unlikely that the Autumnus horse will leave his present quarters.

T. Lloyd’s team has arrived in the North Island to race at Woodville and approaching holiday meetings. Gay Crest, Adelphi, Royal Baby and Desert Song comprise the team.

The New Zealand-bred gelding, Papatu, who has been racing in Sydney for a couple of seasons, broke down in a race at Randwick this month and he will require a long spell.

The pacer Kreisler is getting into good order at Addington and will be one of D. Bennett's team which will be raced on the West Coast circuit during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Mr W. Hargreaves, of Dunedin, has purchased the Last Dart three-year-old gelding Banderillo. The gelding is running out in a paddock, and will join R. C. Reed's stable after the holiday meetings.

Overhaul has built up into good solid condition and looks in fine healthy order for another preparation, says ‘‘Sentinel.” It will, however, take some little time to fine him down to racing shape.

Omeo has improved wonderfully in looks since the winter and one would not recognize the ordinary looking angular horse that contested the big steeplechaser. He has developed all round, and is a classylooking customer, says an exchange.

The hurdler Panorama has made a good recovery from the injury he received while being exercised at Trent ham a couple of months ago, but it will be some time yet before his trainer (11. L. Kingan) starts another preparation on him.

C. Gieseler is training a smart, little filly in Maid of Mars that would be a good proposition for the pony ranks, writes “Sentinel.” She is a three-year-old by Night Raid from Martuko by Martian —Mazabuku, bv Chaucer.

The pacer Arachne did her first racing when trained by’ F. Monk at. Kaikoura. Later she went to the North Island and she has been racing in Auckland for some time past. She is now back at Kaikoura under F. Monk's charge.

The Awapuni lady trainer, Mrs A. AV. McDonald, who had to undergo an operation in October, is still confined to. her room. She had a bad turn about a week ago, but at latest reports she was progressing favourably.

AVilma Dillon is back in work again at Addington and pacing along in his attractive style. He has hardly raced up to expectations since coming from the south and seems to be best over sprint courses, says the Christchurch Star.

Nothing is doing better at New Plymouth at present than Royal Finance. The Paper Money mare is working very well, and, with Gray in the saddle, was responsible for a great half-mile on Tuesday. She is being prepared for the Hack Cup there on Boxing Day.

Invictus had his first race in the Laghnihor Plate at Ashburton on Saturday. He is said to be a classy’ looking three-year-old by St. Petersburg from Mydora, by Sarto, and has shown much promise by his track essays. He received a short course of training last season, but. after being gelded a few months back he was given a spell.

A. Eastwood intends to be present at the AVoodville meeting opening to-day, his mounts including Black Songster and Bold Front. He will also attend the Auckland Summer meeting, and has been engaged for Gay Crest in the Cup and Autopay in the Railway Handicap, and he will ride Great Star in his engagements after the first day.

Fortune’s AVheel. the five-year-old sister to Phar Lap. by Night. Raid from Entreaty', has been restricted to light exercise since she joined Mrs J. Campbell’s stable at Riccarton. She has built up well under this treatment, and it is intended to start, her on regular track work in a. few days, says the Christchurch Star.

Sprinters by the New Zealand sire, Paper Money, have done well in Australia, the latest to distinguish himself being 1.0. U., from the imported mare, Esther. After racing successfully in Queensland, yvhere his wins included the Stradbrooke Handicap, 1.0. U. went to Melbourne and last month scored a brilliant victory in the Rosstown Plate at Caulfield.

Mr J. J. Carlson, a successful Victorian amateur rider, is ambitious to have a mount in the next Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree and has this in view when he leaves shortly on a trip to the Old Country. He will ■ be accompanied by the professional cross-country jockey, D. Zeally, who will also look out for a ride or two as incidents of a holiday trip.

Gordon Richards ended a remarkable run of 55 consecutive losers when he won the Scarborough Stakes at Newmarket on Tea Party 11. at the end of last month. It was his first success since scoring on Somerset, on October 16. Fox is now leading Richards by nine in the contest for the championship, having ridden 121 winners against Gordon’s 112.

N. L. Price is handling a big, powerful looking pacer by Author Dillon from hie old favourite, Nordica, says the Christchurch Times. The veteran trainer realizing that the youngster would require time to mature, has not hurried him and he is now four years old. Price has just put him into work, but he will be taken along very slowly. His owner-trainer has a high opinion of the young pacer.

E. C. McDermott is working at Addington a good type of chestnut filly by Iravis Axworthy from Sallywood, who goes at the trotting gait. This youngster was taken * up last season, but it was deemed advisable to give it a bit more lime, and

the decision seems to have been a wise one, for the trotter has grown appreciably in the interim. While by no means perfectgaited as yet, the filly can get over the ground in fair style.

C. Emerson has recommissioned I-qcli-laggan, after a short spell, and he hopes to have the Woodend-Glentruin two-year-old ready to race at the Dunedin summer meeting, says the Christchurch Star. The Last Dart —Boadicea filly, also two years old, is moving along in useful tasks, but she will not be in racing shape until the back end of the season. The two-year-old filly, Battle Queen, by Paladin from Kai Arihi, has been suffering from an injured foot but she is all right again and ready to resume work.

F. J. Smith, the ex-English trotting trainer, who has met with a fair measure of' success since he settled in Auckland, is contemplating a move from Epsom, and has entered into negotiations for a property in an Auckland suburban area. Smith has a useful team in hand at present, including Linnett the Great, Queen Elizabeth, Pavlova and Man o' Belle, and expects two horses' from Canada to arrive in a week. The Derby candidate Worthy Nor, who has been enjoying a short let up, will rejoin the team in a few days.

The breeding of thoroughbred horses seems to be in a bad way in Belgium. Most noted breeding establishments in that country are, or were, owned by Mr Wittouck, one of the leading racing men of the Continent. Recently Mr Wittouck held a dispersal sale, and only six colts changed hands. The average price obtained for these was £l7O. It is stateel that there are now only two breeders in Belgium. As til) per cent, of the races in Belgium are reserved for horses bred in the country, good class yearlings should be an attractive investment. Entry fees are very low and are added to the stakes in .every race. As things are, there does not appear to be much Hi ducement for anyone to invest money in the breeding industry. Prices obtained for yearlings would not cover the cost of service fees in most other countries.

Mr 11. Mitchell, owner of Mountain Dell, has solved the problem of securing a place in the Auckland Cup field for his mare by nominating her for New Brighton, says the Auckland Herald. Entered in the Mace Memorial Handicap, 4min 40sec limit, Mountain Dell is on 4min 28sec, and having been handicapped on this mark she is now eligible for the Auckland Cup through the insertion of the clause in the conditions “or been handicapped to do” 4rain 28sec. Mountain Dell’s position is similar to that of Reremai last year, when J. Simkin entered his mare at Ashburton to qualify by handicap for the Adams Memorial Cup, which she duly won. Mountain Dell may prove equal to the big contract set her, and with recent racing in her favour she should strip in rare condition for the great event. Like Wrackler in the New Zealand Cup field, Mountain Dell, 4min 33sec, will have the slowest winning time against her of the Auckland Cup probables, but on a good track she is capable of going a lot faster. E. J. Smith will pilot the Epsom candidate in her Christmas engagements. THE AUCKLAND CUP. REVIEW OF THE FIELD. (Special to the Times.) Auckland, December S. Night March, in being awarded 9.13 in the Auckland Cup, received just as much as it was expected he would. He could well have been given ten stone, but the psychological effect would probably have resulted in the son of Night Raid stopping at home, although from the point of avoirdupois the additional sixteen ounces might not make a material difference. However, in setting Night March to carry but half a stone more than he won the New Zealand Cup, with, it was obvious that many other good ones would have to be literally “fired in” on paper, although such might not prove to be actually the case. In this direction the following table will prove illuminating, indicating where the horses mentioned finished in the New Zealand Cup last month: Auckland N.Z. Fin. PosiCup Cup lion N.Z. Cup. Night March . . 9.13 9.6 Ist Star Stranger . . 8.13 9.1 9th Concentrate . . 8.13 8.10 2nd In the Shade . 8.3 8.2 3rd Count Palatine . 7.1 7.6 7th Gay Crest . . 7.1 7.13 sth Duellona . . . 7.6 7.1 Sth Desert. Glow . 7.0 7.0 11th My’ Own . . . 7.0 7.0 6th The above table is quite interesting, inasmuch as practically' all the proved stayers of the Dominion contested the Riccarton two-miles event. It will be noticed that Concentrate and In the Shade now come in on 41b and 61b better terms with Night March, and with the latter up in the region of ten stone the concession to the other pair is in reality more than it seems. From all accounts In the Shade was very unlucky in the New Zealand Cup. He has gone on the right way since, and there seems little doubt that he will now be one of the hardest to beat at Ellerslie. There is every reason to regard the Australian Sun gelding as a bright prospect just now, brighter than anything else. Concentrate, too, must be a problem for the others, for he will probably be a better horse on Boxing Day than at Riccarton. He won last year, so that he knows the righthand way round. If ever there was a good thing beaten in an Auckland Cup it was Star Stranger twelve months ago. It is probable that he is not so good now as then, but there was little sign of old age when he finished a great second to My Own in the C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap. With a pound more this month and in his best form he will take some beating. An interesting performer with a luxury weight such as he has not had for fifteen months is Historic. The fact that, the big chestnut was not entered for the N.Z. Cup was taken as an indication that he was not regarded as a genuine stayer. On the other hand he has run his best races at Ellerslie, and so may be left to take his chance. At the weight, he reads well. Then there is the crack three-year-old of last year, Hunting Cry, who has 8.2. On his last, year’s form this gelding can be considered well treated in getting in at 121 b under weight-for-age, and under the scale he is regarded as 201 b below Night March. That in itself gives an idea of the task confronting the Riccarton champion and causes one to look below him for this year’s Auckland Cup winner. Corinax, a previous winner,- may not be seasoned enough for a task of this de : scription, but he may be a nuisance over the shorter distances on the other days of the carnival. Paquito and Seatown appear next on the list, and over the distance the former is preferred. Lightly Weighted. It was said that after the N.Z. Cup meeting Count Palatine was suffering from corns; if such is the case he may not. be such a prime fancy as otherwise would have been the case. Nevertheless he was another unlucky runner at Riccarton and he will only need to be delivered at the post fit and well to be a likely candidate. Gay Crest too has a fine show now that he is a pound over the minimum. He was not seen at his best at Riccarton, and improvement in his condition points to him being a reasonable prospect. Of the others on the minimum, one must not overlook that hardy old veteran Count Cavour. Ellerslie at' Cup time without the Count would be like a stew without onions. A distinct possibility is the chestnut, despite the fact that he has failed to show recent form. He is a rare stayer and has a marked preference for Ellerslie. Then there -is My Own, who ran a honest race in the N.Z. Cup and then won the Metropolitan with 7.3;‘now she has 31b less. This filly keeps on improving and she may be able to see the two miles right out after the racing she has been having.

The Three-Year-Olds. After Sargon’s impressive win at Takapuna last week it was interesting to see how he and Cylinder would be treated. The latter has 7.6, three pounds under weight-for-age, and he is regarded as 51b better than Sargon. It is likely that nether will see the post in the Cup, however, for the stables have other and stronger hopes engaged in Star Stranger and In the Shade. ' Compensation will be forthcoming in the Derby, all going well, for if Sargon can stand up to his work he is likely to make it quite interesting for Cylinder in the Great Northern Derby on New Year’s Day. Of others engaged in the Auckland Cup a preference is expressed for Courageous, Pahu, Spearmlss, Standfast and Tc Hoia. Summed up, what appear to be the pick ' of the field at present- are regarded as , In the Shade , Concentrate t Count Palatine ( Star Stranger Hunting Cry ' Night March > The first acceptance is not due until De- . cember 19, a week before the race, so that i it will be some . time yet before there is i enlightment as, to the composition of this year’s Cup field. CRICKET. SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. FIXTURES -FOR SATURDAY. The weekly meeting of the Southland Cricket Association was held last evening, Mr E. V. Mills (president) presiding over the following members: Dr. Uttley, Messrs A. G. Seddon, Miller, Nicol, P. Maher, J. Gilbertson, T. Battergby, J. Smith, H. Drees, C. G. L. Pollock, R. V. Taylor, J. The dates of ■ the junior representative match between Otago and Southland at Dunedin were set down for January 4 and 5. As some misunderstanding still exists regarding the playing of extra time when time is lost at' the commencement of a game, it was decided to circularize clubs to the effect that the quarter of an hour’s grace is not to be regarded as time to be made up; also that where time is lost on the first day of a two-day match, time must be made up on that day. .
