On Wednesday evening there was a large attendance present at the Mataura Island Public Hall, the occasion being a farewell social to Miss Bradshaw, who has been on the staff of the Mataura Island School for some time, and who is now severing her connection with the school. The evening was devoted to dancing, music being supplied by Mrs A. Christie and Miss E. Waters, while the duty of floormaster rvas carried out by Mr T. Peterson. Mr William McKeown, on behalf of the assembled friends, asked Miso Bradshaw's acceptance of a handsome leather suitcase as a small mark of the esteem and respect in which she was held by the district residents, at the same time wishing her every happiness and prosperity in her future walk in life. Mr Cassells, headmaster, Mataura Island School, said he was veny sorry that Miss Bradshaw was leaving Mataura Island as she had been a faithful teacher and had been of great service to him in all tl?e school work. He wished her every prosperity in future life. Miss Bradshaw suitably replied. Tennis. On Wednesday evening the Glenham Tennis Club held its official opening, there being a large attendance of members present. Mr A. C. Bulling (president), in the course of his remarks, expressed pleasure at the tine attendance, which showed that despite the unfavourable weather conditions, there was a spirit of enthusiasm among the members. They now had a good court, and he had much pleasure in declaring it open for play, and hoped that the season would prove most successful. The play, which took the form of a Yankee tournament, was won by A. Ferguson and W. Dewe. At the conclusion of play all adjourned to the Public Hall where a dance was held. Mr A. Ferguson, club captain, gave some useful advice to the new players, and mentioned that if those who were good players would give a little time to the learners, it would be only a short time before they could look forward to having matches with outside clubs. Miss Mclntyre, Westport, is at present visiting Mr and Mrs F. Ball, Ferry street. Miss G. G. Wilson, Balclutha, spent the week-end in Wyndham as the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs A. A. Wilson, senr., Ferry street. Mr Stalker, Kelso, was a visitor to ■Wyndham during the week, and was -a visitor at the Wyndham Show. Mr and Mrs 11. E. Niven. Edendale, who have been visiting Christchurch, have returned home. Mrs C. Carnic, senr., Mat aura Island, who has been spending a holiday in the north, has returned to her home. Mr E. Thompson, Christchurch, is at present visiting Mr and Mrs D. A. Howden, Slataura Island. Mrs C. C. Worry, Wyndham, accompanied by her son, Peter, is at present visiting Christchurch. Miss C. Cassells, Christchurch, has been appointed assistant teacher at the Mataura Island School in place of Miss Bradshaw. Mrs Robert O’Brien, Lawrence, is at present the guest of Mr and Mrs G. I'. O'Brien, South Wyndham. Miss L. Humphries, of the Training College. Dunedin, is at present visiting her mother. Mr D. Fletcher, Balclutha, was a visitor to Wyndham during the week-end as the guest of Mr and Mrs A. A. M ilson, lorry street. Mr D.'McDougall, M.P. for Mat aura, was a visitor to 'Wyndham on Wednesday, and attended the A. and P. Show. Caledonian Sports Society. A general meeting of the Wyndham and District Caledonian Sports Society was held in the Oddfellows Hall, Wyndham, on Saturday evening, Mr G. J. C. Smart (president) presiding over a good attendance. The chairman said that Messrs de la Mare, Davey and himself had been appointed to go into the matter of securing a secretary, and he now had pleasure in moving that Mr M. Milburn be elected secretary. This was seconded by Mr de la Mare and carried unanimously. Mr Marsh asked if any arrangements had been arrived at in regard to the renumeration attached to the secretaryship, and on the matter being discussed it was decided to hold it over in the meantime. The programme as submitted by the programme committee was approved. The following officials were appointed for the sports: Superintendent of sports, Mr J. J. Christie; judges, running, Messrs IV. Mr J. Woods mentioned that the dancing events were staged too far away from the pavilion and the attendance became scattered. He thought that they should endeavour to hold the events closer to the pavilion. It was decided that the matter be referred to the grounds committee for consideration.

The question of an entertainment on the evening of the, sports was left to the social committee to deal with. It was.decided that the secretary communicate -with the W'yndham Pipe Band and ask it to be in attendance on sports day. The matter of programmes was introduced by Mr McDonald, the chairman remarking that las-t year they were a “wash-out." It was difficult to get people to purchase them. The venture cost the society something like £5. After discussion it was decided that the Edendale and Mataura Societies be written to and asked for a copy of their programmes and that the matter be fully considered at the next meeting. Mr D. P. Christie reported that the arrangements for the dinner competition were well in hand, and the matter of arranging a suitable guessing article was left in the hands of Mr de la Mare. It was resolved that nominations close on January 7 and that any further details in reference to the programme be left to the programme committee. The matter of gate entrance was mentioned by Mr Marsh, who said that a stipulation should be made for youth from 14 years’to under 18 years at one shilling. The question was freely discussed and it tvas finally decided that it be left to the discretion of the gatekeepers.
