BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church was filled by a large congregation on Sunday afternoon when Sunday School prizes were distributed amongst the scholars. Among those who attended were the superintendent, Mr M. Hutton, teachers and children of the Methodist Sunday School. Addresses suitable to the occasion were given by the Rev. S. Waddell, of St. Paul's, and Mr N. Porter (superintendent). Hymns were sung by Miss D. Stalker, and (in duets) Peggy Doyle and Vera Calder and Jock Walker and James Bradshaw. Psalms were recited by Gracie Ross, George Te Au and Jock Walker. Miss A. Waddell acted as organist. At the conclusion of the service Mr Porter called on Mr Hutton to distribute the prizes. Next Sunday a similar function will take place in the Methodist -Church, the visitors on that occasion being the members of St. Paul’s congregation and Sunday School. Since the series of races for the vicepresidents’ cup concluded, matters in the local rowing world have been a good deal less in public notice. A run of unseasonable weather has seriously hampered training activities, though, in spite of this, the. more enthusiastic oarsmen have kept themselves fit by seizing every opportunity for a spin and, when rowing was impossible, turning to road work—an excellent substitute. The loss of boat practice to the teams is disturbing the selectors, who naturally wish the crews to be in proper fettle for the regattas ahead. In this connection they are asking the men to concentrate bn road work when weather conditions are against rowing. Some of the selected lads in the youths’ and maidens’ crews especially are in need of solid training; and as not a great deal of time remains before the first regatta they are urged to get. seriously down to business right away in fairness to those who are negelecting no opportunity of keeping fit. The selectors have now picked the crews to represent Bluff at Riverton regatta. They are as follows: Seniors four, A. Morrison (stroke), C. Hunter, H. Tall and W. Burtenshaw; juniors, T. Fowler (stroke), L. Denton, H. Jamieson and H. Johnson; maiden fours, (a) L. Morrison (stroke), Newell, Farrington and Potts; (b) J. Drake (stroke), Wilson, Barton and G. Richardson: youths’ fours, (a) L. Johnston (s), N. Beaton, J. Dixon and B. Macdonald. A race will be rowed to deckle which will be selected as the B team between the following crews: P. Roderique (s), Mclntyre, Freude, Calder; and L. Weir (s) ; Greig, Low and Giles. The selected pairs are: Seniors, (a) H. Tall and W. Burtenshaw; (b) C. Hunter and T. Ross; juniors, (a) T. Fowler and H. Johnston, (b) H. Jamieson and L. Denton; maiden, (a) M. Farrington and W. Newell, (b) L. Morrison and J. Potts; youths, (a) L. Johnston and N. Beaton, (b) J. Dixon and B. Macdonald. As there remain many local oarsmen who are not on the list selected to represent the club at Riverton, a series of double sculls events will be rowed off to cater for these. Two supporters of the club in Messrs Cecil Dixon and A. E. Budd have, generously donated trophies for the winners. The following pairs will compete: T. Ross and P. Crawford; C. Dixon and J. Nixey; A. Rouse and J. Parry; A. E. Budd anti D. Robins; G. Niven and G. Derbridge: A. Burtenshaw and C. Tonkinson; G. King and C. Denny; C. Smith and 11. Denny; B. Solomon and G. Burton; E. Skipworth and W. Te Au: C. Rapsey and N. Murray.
