DISTRICT NEWS

PUKERAU NOTES.. (From Our Correspondent.) On Monday evening of last week Mr B. Aldridge, who has filled the office of postmaster at Pukerau for the last three years and who is shortly being transferred to Milton, was entertained at a farewell social and dance in the local hall. Mr P. O’Hagan presided over a large attendance and at a suitable intervals made complimentary reference to the sterling qualities of the guest of the evening. Mr Aldridge, he said, had at all times been a most courteous and obliging official and had the confidence of the public in the important position he had so capably filled. The well kept grounds and the beautiful flowers he had cultivated were a source of admiration to all and lent an attractive appearance to the precincts of the Post Office. He had always been a willing worker in local affairs and took a keen interest in the football, cricket and tennis clubs. The residents of the district felt that they could not let Mr Aldridge depart without showing their appreciation of his services to the community. On their behalf he (the chairman) had much pleasure in asking Mr Aldridge to accept a gold wristlet watch and wished him further success in the. service. The chairman’s remarks were endorsed by Messrs L. Marshall, G. Gordon, E. Hoare and H. Potter. On rising to respond Mr Aldridge was heartily applauded. It was, he said, difficult to adequately thank his hearers for their valuable gift and the many kind references made to himself that night. He felt that he had only done his .duty to the community and would always have pleasant recollections of his residence in Pukerau. He thanked them most gratefully for honouring him in such a handsome and appreciative manner. During the evening solos were contributed by Miss McLay, Mrs Millar and Messrs G. Styles and S. Edwards, Mrs Nixon being the accompanist. Music for the dance was supplied by Messrs Valentine, Brown, Kirk, Sasse and Trusler and Mr Dripps carried out the duties of M.C. In order to enhance the funds of the Cricket Club a series of progressive euchre tournaments have been arranged. The first of these was held last Friday evening. The ladies’ prize, a Christmas cake, donated by Mr R. Richardson, was won by Mrs Murdoch. The men’s prize, a trophy presented by Messrs R. and S. Edwards, went to Mr A. Allan. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss Hocking and Mr J. Burke.
