OTAUTAU NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

At a general meeting of members of the Otautau Tennis Club on Saturday evening, the tender of Mr M. Coulter was accepted for the new pavilion. Presentations. Prior to their departure to take up the duties of probationers at the Southland Hospital Misses K. Harrington and F. Duncan were met by the members of the Otautau Hockey Club. Miss D. Stevens asked Miss Harrington to accept a gold-mounted fountain pen, and Miss Duncan was presented with a xylonite brush and powder bowl, both being wished every success in their profession. In reply Miss Duncan thanked the members for their gift, and said anything she had been able to do had been a pleasure, and because she had enjoyed the game. Miss Harrington also suitably responded. Both left yesterday to take up their new duties. Bowling and Croquet. Due to the inclement conditions prevailing on Saturda- the Bowling and Croquet Clubs were unable to declare their greens officially open for the season. The functions will now take place on Wednesday, 22nd inst. Athletic Society. A meeting of the committee of the Otautau Athletic Society on Saturday evening was well attended, Mr G. Sinclair, president, occupying -the chair. The'chairman said they had met to make final arrangements for the sports meeting on Labour Day. He wished to thank Messrs Stevens, Milne, Rowan, Davis and others who had prepared the ground, and Mr Walker, -who had harrov.-cd and rolled the track. All the hollows had been filled up, and it was anticipated the track would be in first class order for the meeting. He regretted to state the entries were a little below those of last year, but they were, sure to get some late entries, and they could put on a fair sports meeting. He congratulated Mr 'Williams, for the energetic manner in which he had sold tickets. It was resolved to extend the date for receiving nominations for all events until Tuesday, October 21, at 8 p.m. Mr A. E. Cocker wrote regretting that the axemen were unable to hold their final trials at Otautau sports on Labour Day, as they had to raise money by' holding these trials in various places. If the society was prepared to give a donation of £5, they would arrange to put- on doublehanded and single-handed exhibition events, when an attempt could be made at the record, or they could arrange to match them against all-comers. The same could be done in regard to the chopping. He also suggested that a function be held in the hall, by which means the sum of £l5 to £2O might be raised towards the expenses of the team.

Mr Williams said he thought all sporting bodies should assist these men to go to Tasmania, and it would be a big draw if they could make arrangements for 'them to be present on the day of the sports. Mr Rowan was of opinion the society should make a donation and Messrs O’Brien and Sinclair supported this view, as it would show the members were in sympathy with the object. It was resolved to make a donation of £5, provided the axemen appear at the sports meeting.

Application for permission to charge admission to the grounds was granted by the Town Board.

The president, Messrs Fraser, Williams, Hassed and the secretary, were appointed a committee to draw up the programme, Messrs Williams and Hassed were delegated to attend to the logs, and Mr G. H. Stevens was appointed convenor of a working bee to' finally fix up the grounds.
