A NEW BEGINNING.

The brief announcement issued by the Southland Radio Club yesterday will be read with interest by all radio owners in the province, since it means that the executive of the club has tackled its difficulties and has succeeded in making a new arrangement acceptable to both the club and to Mr It. T. Parsons of 4ZP which will ensure better working in the future. Under the chairmanship of Mr A. W. Jones, the subcommittee appointed by the executive of the club, evolved a scheme which should put broadcasting on a better basis than it was formerly. The experience gained in the first months of the club’s operations has been turned to good account, and in the new scheme Mr Jones was most active in securing an understanding favourable to all parties. He is to be congratulated on the manner in which the situation has been handled, and we believe that the new arrangements will work admirably. Station 4ZP will continue to, operate in conjunction with the Southland Radio Club and the future, it seems to us, is assured. It is pleasing to be able to record (he success attending the efforts of the sub-committee, over which Mr Jones presided, and he its entitled to the thanks of the members of the elub for the satisfactory position in which the club and the station now find themselves. Now that this difficulty has been overcome there will be, we hope, a readier response to the appeal on behalf of the List-eners-in League, which is organized to protect the interests of the large section of the public which receives the benefits of broadcasting undertaken by the “B” stations. The recent pronouncements by the Post-master-General do not promise any action before 1932, and in the meantime the listeners-in must be prepared to help themselves by strengthening the League. At the same time the League can help the Radio Club in its efforts to secure some part of the revenue drawn from crystalset owners for the “B” stations on whom they depend exclusively for service. Mr Jones recently stated that the -Southland Radio Club was going to press this matter energetically, and with the local position put on a satisfactory basis he will be able- to take up this larger issue with, we hope, the aid of the League.
