The monthly meeting of the Wyndham and District High School Committee was held on Monday evening, October 13, Mr P. Campbell (chairman) presiding over the following: Messrs A. T. Ross (secretary), W. A. Leitch, L. Harper, W. O. C. McKay, A. Ronald, J. H. Marshall, and J. A. Cushen (rector). The secretary of the Eastern Southland Hockey Association wrote asking the school to return the Pigeon Cup at. present held by the Wyndham Primary School hockey team, explaining that such was not. to be won outright and was therefore the property of the association. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the association advising that the school had won the Cup three times in succession, in terms of the conditions in which the team had competed for the trophy, and therefore the committee considered that the cup was the school’s property and could not be returned as requested.

The secretary of the Southland School Committees’ Association wrote advising that it was intended to hold the next meeting of the Association at Wyndham on November 3, and if the proposal was accepted that all school committees within a radius of 20 miles would be advised to attend. It was resolved that, the suggestion ' be accepted. The secretary’ reported that the net proceeds of the recently held school concert amounted to £27 17/9, the expenses having totalled £2 11/-. The chairman said that it was most satisfactory’ and expressed gratitude of the work done by the teaching staff, and comnlimented them on the staging of such a fine concert programme. The rector’s report stated: Average attendance, Boys 106.15; girls 91; total 197.15. Average roll, boys 108.75; girls 96.25; total 205. The annual school excusion was fixed to take place to Bluff on the first Wednesday in February. Messrs W. Leitch and Harper were appointed the visiting committee for the I month. |

Valedictory. A large and representative gathering of Glenham settlers met. at the Public Hall, Glenham, on Monday evening for a euchre tournament. The fortnightly series of euchre parties had terminated a few weeks ago, and the additional social function had been decided on with a view to tendering to Mr B. Munro a presentation. Mr A. C. Bulling presided and the earlier part of the evening was devoted to cards, the winners proving to be Mr R. Shaw and Mrs N. McKenzie. A dance followed, music for which was supplied by Messrs J. Rabbidge and W. Brown. Mr R. K. Bain (chairman of the Hall Committee) referred in glowing terms of Mr Munro's residence in the district and the loyal support that he had accorded to anything pertaining to its welfare. Mr Bulling said that when it became known that their guest was about to take his departure from the district, the local community decided not to let Mr Munro leave without expressing the esteem and respect in which he was held, together with good wishes for his future. Messrs J. Scott and G. S. Templeton also spoke. Mr Bulling asked the guest’s acceptance of a case of Loewe pipes, wishing him every success wherever he settled, and trusting that at the close of his day’s work, he would be long spared to enjoy a good smoke with happy memories of. his relationship with the Glenham people. Mr Munro was greeted with applause, and thanked the donors for their present and for their kind and flattering remarks. During the course of the evening songs were contributed by Mr A. Diack and Mrs Ferguson, while the accompaniments were played by Miss K. Hart. Bowls. On Wednesday afternoon an innovation was introduced at the local Bowling Club when the members of the fair sex joined with the male members of the club in an hour or two’s relaxation at this popular summer pastime. Angling. The Wyndham Anglers’ Club held its first competition of the season on Wednesday afternoon, the conditions providing for fishing on any river, with any bait. Fishing conditions were not very good, most of the streams running fairly high, which no doubt accounted for the small weigh in. The first prize went to Mr J. Hayes

I (Wyndham) with 1G fish totalling 1711 b, Mr R. Robertson (Wyndham) was second with eight fish weighing Glib, and W. Leitch third with four fish weighing 51b. All three fishermen were on the Wyndham River. Lorry’s Little Jaunt. A mild sensation was caused in Redan Street, Wyndham, on Thursday morning when a niilk lorry owned by Mr K. McLennan, which had been left with the engine running alongside Messrs Henderson and Company’s premises, somehow or other slipped into gear and moved off unattended. It did not get far, however, before it ran on to the, footpath, and striking a pole, swung round and finished up in the yard of an unoccupied home, levelling portion of the picket fence, which fortunately was the, only damage done.
