COLAC BAY NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The euchre evening held on Friday last in aid of hall funds proved most enjoyable and profitable. The various prizes were donated by z several patrons and the saving thus effected was of considerable benefit to the committee. The first prize in the ladies’ section was won by Miss T. Wixon. The prize was donated by Mr J. Branks (Riverton'). For the ladies’ second prize, given by Mr A. Robertson, Mesdames Whittle, Egerton, and McCulloch tied and in the play off Mrs Whittle was the fortunate one. The men’s first prize, donated by Mr L. Dutton, was won by Mr J. Cleaver. For the second prize, donated by Mrs T. 'Egerton, Messrs McCulloch, Egerton and Coulston drew. In the play off Mr Egerton won. Mr McCulloch received the hidden number prize given by Mrs W. Hopwood (Riverton). According to reports some pfospectors at Round Hill have struck a patch to which they intend devoting their attention. During the /week some extra labour was engaged at the Wakapatu claim where everything is going on satisfactorily at present. The survey for the new road at Round Hill is almost completed and. when the construction has been carried out the route from Colac to Pahia will be greatly shortened. A commission of inquiry into Native lands and farming interests is visiting Colac and it is hoped improved facilities will result. On Saturday evening a motor lorry came into contact with a telegraph pole on the Colac-Round Hill road. Fortunately the occupants escaped with minor abrasions and the lorry was only slightly damaged as a result of the impact. The following residents of Colac attended an interesting wedding at Bluff on Wednesday evening: Mrs P. Te Au, Mrs K. Te Au, Mr and Mrs Belsham, Mr J.'Coupar, Mrs Winiata and the Misses Goodwillie (TihakaL The contracting parties were Roy Hawea, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Shepard, a direct descendant, of the first white man to settle at Bluff, and Louise Hinehaka Lavina, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Te Au, Bluff. There were over 100 guests present at the breakfast. The toasts were given' and replied to according to-true Maori custom. Pleasing items were contributed by Misses L. and T. 'Goodwillie. , Messrs Gaines and Scott (Orawia), Gorry and Harrington spent the week-end at Colac. The following attended the citzens’ ball at Pahia last week: Misses Belsham and Egerton, Messrs Hawke, Hopwood, Blackmore, McLennon, Beer and Cleaver. Mr Reece (Round Hill) has been transferred to Crichton. Miss Perry (Round Hill) has returned from her holiday in Invercargill. Mrs McKenna (Round Hill) has returned from her holiday. • Mrs Whittle (Colac) spent the week-end in Invercargill. Mrs JI. Belsham is spending a holiday at Riverton.
