GENERAL NOTES. Cable advice received states that the Vacuum Oil Company’s tanker Plume left San Francisco on September 16 with a bulk oil cargo for discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. Advice received by the Union Company states that the intercolonial freighter Waikouaiti left Sydnej' at 5. p.m. on Thursday with general cargo for discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, and Bluff. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company’s new 12,000-ton motor-ship Otaio has been fixed to leave Liverpool on January 3 with cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers. The Otaio will be the first of the three new ships to bo completed. The second one, the Orari, will follow in March, leaving Liverpool on March 14 for the same New Zealand ports. Both vessels will be running under the agency of the Federal Company on their maiden voyage. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor liner Rangitata is due at Wellington from London and Southampton on October. 1, and at Auckland on October 8. After completion of discharge at Auckland she is scheduled to commence loading at Auckland on October 13 for her Homeward voyage. Her ofher loading, ports are Gisborne, Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Auckland. She is scheduled to clear Auckland finally for London on November 8.

The Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Brisbane is scheduled to teach Auckland from New York on October 2. Her general merchandise cargo will be unloaded at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. After completion of discharge the vessel is to load for London and West Coast ports of Great Britain at Port Chalmers, Bluff, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Auckland, Nappier and Wellington. She is scheduled to load at Auckland from October 31 to November 4, and to sail from Wellington for London on November 10.

The Norwegian motor ship Fernwood, which arrived at Lyttelton on Thursday from New Orleans and Tampico with general cargo and bitumen, represents the latest in cargo ships. The vessel, which has a dead weight of 8200 tons and a gross tonnage of 4695, was launched in Denmark last June. After her speed trials, in which she averaged 154 knots, she proceeded to Bremen to load for a number of ports in Baltimore. On discharging she proceeded to New Orleans and Tampico to load general and bitumen for Auckland, Lyttelton, Wellington, Wanganui, New Plymouth and Australia. The vessel is fitted with all the latest appliances for the quick handling of cargo. All the winches are electric. She has five hatches. The accommodation for the officers and men is spacious and well appointed. Her length over all is 405 ft. width 55ft, and depth 25ft. She is provided with two sets of Diesel motors, each of 4600 i.h.p., which gives her an average speed of 13 knots. All the appliances on board are worked electrically. On the trip across the Pacific, which occupied 28 days, the weather conditions at the commencement were moderate, but on nearing the New Zealand coast westerly winds were encountered with heavy seas. The vessel carries a complement of thirty all told. On her present voyage she has the guarantee engineer. The’ owners of the vessel are Fearnley and Eger, of Oslo, who control a fairly large fleet of motor ships, mostly employed trading between the east and west coast of America to China and Japan. The Tamatca is expected to arrive at 10.15 a.m. to-day from Stewart Island with passengers, mails and cargo. She leaves again to-morrow at 1.15 pan. for the Island. The Union Steam Ship. Company’s collier Kaimanawa which sailed from Westport at 8.50 a.m. on Sunday, is expected to arrive at Bluff at seven o’clock this morning with coal for discharge. She will complete discharging this evening, leaving to-night for Dunedin. Leaving Lyttelton yesterday afternoon for Bluff direct, the Canterbury. Shipping Company’s coastal steamer Calm is expected to arrive here early to-morrow morning. After discharging and loading general cargo the vessel will return north later in the day.

MAHENO ARRIVES AND SAILS. With 90 tons of cargo for discharge at Bluff and 126 passengers for all New Zealand ports, the Union Company’s inter-col-onial passenger steamer Maheno, which left Melbourne at 10 a.m. last Thursday, berthed at Bluff yesterday morning. After completing discharge, the vessel sailed for Dunedin, Lyttelton and Wellington early in the afternoon. MAHENO’S PASSENGER LIST.
