MEN’S HOCKEY

FIVE-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. HIGH SCHOOL A EMERGE VICTORIOUS. Eleven teams entered fol the five-a-side tournament held by the Southland Men’s Hockey Association at Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon. Heavy rain earlier in the day had rendered the playing grounds into a particularly greasy state and heavy downpours at intervals during the progress of the games did not tend to improve the standard of play. However, the good attendance of spectators witnessed some keen and interesting matches and the fixture proved an undoubted success. Two spells of ten minutes’ duration were played and then, if there was no score or the scores were even, the teams changed ends and continued, the first side to hit the ball over the back line from within the circle gaining half a goal and the match. It is worthy of note that the High School alone entered five teams, each of which gave a good account of itself. School A fought out the final with School B and an interesting position arose. Each team had to be beaten twice before it was eliminated. When it reached the final School A had not been defeated, while School B had, in the fourth round, gone down in defeat to the A’s. Then the B’s, in the final, reversed the position by vanquishing the A combination by two goals to one. A playoff was rendered necessary, but the A team proved undoubtedly superior and gained the day by three goals to nil. ' ( The refereeing was entrusted to the capable hands of Messrs H. S. Cordery, S. Smith, J. D. Gregg and P. Anderson. The teams competing in the final and play-off were as follows: — High School A: Anderson, Hobson, Hughes, McKelvey, Bisect. High School B: Morgan, P. Anderson, Dakin, Barham, Hardcastle. In the final won by School B, Bisset netted early in the game for the A’s, but Dakin equalized just before half-time. The B’s held the ascendancy in the second spell and Hardcastle scored a good goal. In the dying stages he broke away again and had just shot from outside the circle when time sounded.

After a interval the teams again took the field. From a roll-in near half-way McKelvey dashed away to enter the circle, where he scored a good goal. The B’s retaliated, but over-eagerness saw several chances go astray. Ultimately Hobson sent the leather to Hughes, who netted the A’s second goal. The A’s were attacking when half-time sounded. After the interval the A quintet continued to be aggressive, only to find Morgan, the B’s full-back, very safe and reliable in stemming the attacks. Dakin and Hardcastle carried play to their opponents’ circle, but Anderson cleared and the ball was sent to McKelvey, who scored the A’s third and final goal. Both teams gave a good display.
