WOODLANDS NOTES

BOWLING BALL. (From Our Correspondent. ) On Tuesday night despite unfavourable weather conditions the bowling club held what might be called the ball of the year in the Public Hall at Woodlands. There were visitors from every direction as far afield as Wyndham, and there was also a large party from Invercargill. The spacious hall was filled to capacity and the floor was well nigh perfect. Jack Thompson’s popular dance orchestra supplied the music. The committee consisting of Messrs W. Bell, McKendry Bros., with T. Lyall and R. Bonney who acted as M.C's. had things running perfectly. Tennis Club. The tennis club held its annual meeting on Friday night when there was a good attendance. In the absence of the president, Mr J. McHardy, J. Trotter was voted to the chair. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance and the chairman reported that the 1928-30 season had been a successful one. The inter-club matches played during the year had been enjoyable and beneficial to the club. In the election of office-bearers the following were elected:— President, Mr J. Trotter; secretary, Mr H. Peircy; club-captainfi Mr E. A. Richmond; vice-president, Mr A. L. McCaw; vice-cap-tain Miss McKerchar. It was decided to hold an opening day on the same day as the bowling club’s opening. It will most likely take the form of a yankee tournament. It was decided to inquire into the possibility of the club affiliating with some sub-association and playing in the competitions, as it is in the best interests of players and of the club that the competitive sport of a competition should be entered on. Votes of thanks to the past year’s office-bearers brought the meeting to a close. School Sports. The Dacre School football and basketball teams travelled to Morton Mains South on Friday afternoon and were defeated in both games. The hockey and football teams from Roslyn Bush under Mr Cook, travelled to Woodlands, and were successful in defeating the local school in both matches. However the games were closely contested and played in a good spirit. The best teams won. The teachers officiated as referees.
