CAMPAIGN IN SOUTHLAND. MEETING OF LADIES. A meeting of ladies interested in furthering the Cancer Research Campaign in Southland was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms yesterday afternoon when it was decided to proceed with arrangements for a canvass of Invercargill. Mr J. Cuthill, who presided, in outlining the reason for calling the meeting said that the Cancer Campaign had been inaugurated in London to fight the menace and New Zealanders were asked to lend their weight. Accordingly a New Zealand branch of the campaign had been formed, the Dominion having been divided into districts. It. was intended to embark' upon research work in the Dunedin laboratories, and although ti might- be queried why Dunedin should have the honour, it. must be remembered that that city was the medical centre of the Dominion. Again, a portion of the fund would be appropriated to a clinic where exhaustive records would be kept and different methods would be collected throughout New Zealand and made available to the medical profession and to the public. Each centre would have a branch of the clinic— Invercargill would have one and a portion of the funds subscribed in Southland, would support such clinic. ' Further, each division would run its own radium department. Lastly, propaganda work was necessary in order to keep the public aware of some of the work done to eliminate the danger. The fum of £25,000 was aimed at for the Otago and Southland district. Towards this amount the people of Dunedin had responded magnificently, more, than £15,000 having been raised in that city. It behoved the people of Invercargill and Southland to prove as generous as their northern neighbours. Details of organization were then discussed by the ladies present. This morning a deputation from the local Cancer Research Campaign Committee will wait on the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union’with the object of arranging for a canvass of the country districts.
