DESTRUCTIVE FIRE

TWO-STORIED BUILDING GUTTED.

STOCK VALUED AT £4,000 LOST.

Wanganui, September 19.

Fire completely gutted a two-storied draper’s premises in Victoria Avenue tonight resulting in the loss of stock valued at over £4,000.

The premises were occupied by Trevor Thomas and the building was owned by Mrs C. J. Gatenby. The stocks of a chemist, A. McPhail, in the same building and H. J. Grieve, a jeweller, in an adjoining building, were heavily damaged through water. Insurances for Thomas were £2500 on the stock and £5OO on the fittings, all in the General Accident, Fire and Life Assurance Company. The • insurance on the building was £1650 in the New Zealand Insurance Company and on the jeweller's stock the insurances were £lO,OOO divided between the New Zealand Insurance Company and the South British office. On the chemist's stock there was a cover of over £2,000.
