RAILWAY YARDS

CLOSING DOWN AT MIDDLETON. LACK OF GOODS TRAFFIC. (Per United Press Association.) . Christchurch, Steptember 2. Owing to lack of goods traffic the Middleton railway marshalling yards where most of the goods traffic of Christchurch is handled, are being closed down. They will not be opened again until January 31, when the busy export season is at its height. The Christchurch yards will be used in the meantime.

The closing of the yards will throw out of work a number of men. Sixty-five men are on the Middleton staff. Some will be absorbed at Christchurch, but will displace casuals now employed there. The yards were opened at the end of 1927,.
