The British Rugby touring team, under the managership of Mr James Baxter, leaves by the express this morning for Timaru.
Judge F. O. V. Acheson, of the Native Land Court and his associate, Mr J. H. Grace, leave by the express this morning on their way to Wellington. Mr H. A. Leith, travelling representative of the New Zealand Rugby Union with the British touring team, leaves for Timaru by the express this morning.
Mr R. B. Tennant, Superintendent for Southland and Otago of the Feilds Division of the Department of Agriculture, arrived in Invercargill by the express last evening.
Dr G. J. Adams, president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, who has been visiting Invercargill for the match between Great Britain and Southland, leaves for Timaru by this morning’s express.
The general manager of the National Bank has been advised that Viscount Hampden has joined the directors, states a Wellington telegram. Viscount Hampden visited New Zealand 18 months ago and made a wide tour of the Dominion.
Miss M. Ott, who has been transferred from the Invercargill branch of the National Bank to the Christchurch branch, was met by the local staff during the week and was presented with a suitable memento by Mr T. R. Abercrombie, who, in the absence of the manager, voiced the esteem in which Miss Ott was held by all members of the staff.
A Hastings Press Association telegram announces the death of Mr William Heslop, of Hawkes Bay, a pioneer and Maori war veteran. He was born at Blackhill, Northumberland, in 1845, and came to New Zealand ten years later. He was at one time owner of the Omaranui estate, where the historic battle was fought, and he was one of the officials of the first agricultural show in Hawkes Bay in 1863. Before his retirement he carried off many awards in successive shows. He also acted as judge of sheep and horses. His wife predeceased him five years ago, and he leaves two sons, Mr G. Heslop (Wairoa), and Mr Harold Heslop (Kaikohe) and three daughters, Mesdames S. J. Bennett (Hamilton), Ida Messenger (Buckland), and Miss Florence Heslop (Hastings).
