DINNER TO TEAM. MR FORBES’ REASON FOR DEFEAT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 4. At the dinner to the British team given by the Wellington Football Union last night, the Prime Minister and the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle were present. Mr Forbes said: “When the first points went up I thought we were in for a beating and I wondered how I was going to speak at this function gracefully of the result. I worked out the theory that for many years we have been sending all the best of our butter and frozen meat to England and that on' this account the British team should be expected to do pretty well, but when the match ended as it did I could only conclude that our men won because they were closer to the source of original supply.” Cliff Porter congratulated the visitors on the fair game they had played. PORTER NOT SNUBBED RUMOUR DENIED. Wellington, June 4. Rumours that members of the British team snubbed Cliff Porter, captain of the Wellington team, after the match on Tuesday are emphatically denied by Porter. He says that feelings between the Wellington team and the British were most cordial, and he was warmly congratulated by the tourists on his side’s win. JENNINGS INJURED SOBEY LEAVES HOSPITAL. Wellington, June 4. While the British team was practising this morning R. Jennings badly hurt one of his toes. Sobey, vice-captain, who has been in a private hospital with an injured knee, leaves with the team to-night for Christchurch.
