ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES
GUARD FALLS FROM TRAIN.

Christchurch, May 23
Through falling off the Little River electric trian near Hornby this afternoon, W. Ranskill, the guard, received injuries from which he died in the hospital to-night. He was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition and did not regain consciousness.
SEAMAN FATALLY INJURED.
Timaru, May 23
John Heffernan, aged 44, boatswain on the steamer Kalingo, which berthed this morning, was killed through being struck by a heavy piece of timber which was being lowered to the wharf.
Two beams were being hauled clear of the hold when they suddenly swung round, crushing Heffernan against one of the cabins. He was terribly injured on the head and expired in a few minutes. It is understood that deceased was a married man, his home being in Sydney.
