CONCERT RECITAL

A PLEASING .PROGRAMME. An appreciative audience greeted last evening’s concert recital given in the Civic Theatre by the Invercargill Civic Band and assisting artists. A pleasingly varied programme had been arranged and the audience expressed in no uncertain manner its approval of the various items submitted. By means of Station 4ZP the entertainment was shared by hundreds of listenersin throughout the country, favourable reports being received regarding reception. At the recital Invercargill music lovers were introduced to two vocalists of no mean ability, Mr Albert E. Bruce and Miss Winifred Sanderson whose solo and combined work alike was excellent. Mr Bruce’s first offering was “Nirvana” (Stephen Adams) and a recall item was “On With the Motley” (Pagliacci). Both he and Miss Sanderson were heard to advantage in a duet, “Love is Sent to Make us Glad” (“Merrie England”—Edward German) with “Springtime” as a recall item. Mr G. Gunn gave a fine interpretation of “The Trumpeter” (Arlie) and was enthusiastically recalled. A ’cello solo entitled “Star of Eve” by Mr J. Cardno proved a popular feature and an encore was given. Little Miss Doreen Thomson charmed her audience with a song entitled “Daddy’s Lullaby.” Miss Sanderson and Mr J. Thompson were accompanists.

The programme submitted by the band under the conductorship of Mr A. R. Wills, was an excellent one, being as follows: March, “The President”; overture, “Zampa” (Herold) ; grand selection, “The Flying Dutchman” (Wagner); march, “The Liberator.’
