LUMSDEN NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.)
The Lumsden ladies’ hockey team played a match with Riversdale on Saturday last and won by 9 goals to 4. Goals were secured for the winners by Misses C. Reidy, M. Small and M. Sherriff. On Wednesday the club was represented at the Nightcaps tournament, and it is the intention of the club to take part in the seven-a-side tourney at Gore on June 3. Arrangements have been made to hold a seven-a-side tournament in the Northern District on June 14 at Balfour, when the club will again be represented. Interest in the football competition is being well maintained and followers of the game are awaiting the announcement of the district team tc play town on Country Day. The position of full-back would have been filled by Clem Walker, but owing to an injury this player will be out of the game for the season. Ray Sutherland, another probable full-back, is also laid aside with injury and the choice will probably fall on F. Crosbie, a young Lumsden player. Clarence Soper and Ray Pickering should find places in the team as wing three-quar-ters. J. Muir (Balfour) will probably be centre three-quarter, while the remaining positions in the backs are almost sure to go to U. Crosbie, W. Wellman and A. Johnson. In the forwards, Hamer, Richards, Small, Tomlin, last year’s representatives, will again be available as well as Southern and Naylor, who should have little difficulty in gaining places in the team. Other forwards who have been playing well are holey, Stewart, McAuliffe, Manson, Fraser, while in the backs Mcßride and S. Keown are worthy of consideration. The team will be announced after the match played during the weekend. The monthly stock sale was held at the Lumsden yards on Wednesday when there was a small yarding and a large attendance of farmers. There was a greatly improved tone ruling at the sale and prices generallyshowed an advance on those at previous sales. The following will give an idea of the range of prices: Mixed Hoggetts 14/2 to 15/2, ewes brought froni 15/7 to 24/, lambs were’ sold up to 24/7. There was a small yarding of cattle, steers bringing from £9 to £lO 10/- calves £2 16/-, and cows £5 to £6 10/-. A sudden change in the weather occurred on Wednesday when a fall of snow was experienced. On Thursday morning the ground was covered with snow which, however, quickly disappeared during the day. The high country has received a heavy coating and some hard frosts are expected from now on. On Saturday evening a five-roomed house owned by Mr. H. F. Ruddenklau and occupied by Mr. George Murphy was totally destroyed by fire. Mr. and Mrs. Mtirphy were not at home when the fire broke out and nothing was saved. The house was a comparatively new one and was situated on Mr. Ruddenklau’s farm in the Castle Rock district.
