The Awarua (weather permitting) will sail at 1.15 p.m. to-day. The shipping movements at the port will prevent the tug (Theresa'Ward) from running to the Island till Wednesday, May 28. The foolta left Auckland last evening for Napier, Dunedin and Bluff, being due here at the end of the month to discharge timber from Grafton. The Canterbury Shipping Company’s coastal steamer Calm from Lyttelton, berthing at Bluff this morning, will discharge 250 tons of general cargo. She will load a similar quantity and proceed this evening to Dunedin, weather conditions permitting. June 2 is the date of her next arrival at Bluff. The Union Company’s steamer Waikawa from Wellington, due at Bluff this morning, will load cargo here for Melbourne. It is

hoped to despatch her this evening for the Victorian port direct. The Karepo from Westport via Lyttelton, Timaru and Dunedin, is expected to arrive at Bluff to-morrow to unload 1,000 tons of coal. She returns later to Westport. ■ The Union tCompany’s transpacific freighter Waihemo, was to have left Ocean Falls on May 18 for San Francisco and Los Angeles to complete loading for Napier, where she is due on June 21. Her other ports of call will be Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, Nelson and New Plymouth. Messrs H. L. Tapley and Company advise that their Dunedin office has been appointed agents for the Oceanic and Oriental Navigation Company (Matson Line) whose “Golden” steamers will leave Portland, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angles, Seattle and Tacona monthly for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. These vessels will bring out cargo and take back any that should be offering. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Ruahine, which left Lyttelton the other afternoon for Wellington, loaded more than 50,000 carcasses of mutton in addition to fairly large consignments of wool and other produce. The well-known P. and O. branch service liner Bcltana, 11,220 tons gross, built by Cairds at Greenock in 1912 for the Australian service, has been sold to Japanese shipbreakers for about £27,500, with delivery at Osaka this month. The Shaw, Savill steamer Mahana arrived in the Lower Harbour, Dunedin, on Tuesday afternoon from London, via Panama. The trip was uneventful.. On April 11 the Mahana left the Thames, and down the English Channel the weather was still wintry but moderate. The rain cleared when the Channel was left behind, and the weather was fair on the run across the Atlantic. On April 27 the steamer reached Colon at 11 a.m. After bunkering she navigated the Panama canal, and at 10.30 p.m. that day she cleared Balboa for New Zealand. That was considered good despatch. As usual the weather was fine on the run across the Pacific. A long swell from the south-west: was experienced in the vicinity of Pitcairn Island, which was not sighted. The weather then improved again and was moderate until about 2 a.m. on Tuesday when a violent gale, with rain, was-encoun-tered. It lasted for eight hours and reduced the vessel’s headway delaying her arrival by about-three hours. The average speed from London, to Taiaroa Head was 12.8 knots. The Mahana’s cargo is consigner! to Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Napier, at which ports'it will be discharged'direct. Personal Items. . Captain J. M.
