BALFOUR NOTES. The long spell of dry weather was broken last week, and rain fell, which in a measure relieved the situation. Reports state that wells which were never known to be dry were at a very low ebb and in many instances were dry. Amongst the dry ones is that at the Longridge Hotel, which “petered out” for the first time in its history. The Waikaia and Balfour A grade Rugby teams met at Balfour on Saturday in their first match of 'the competition, the game resulting in a victory for the local team by 20 points to 3. The play throughout was of an uninteresting nature, more especially in the first spell, which ended without a score. The second spell opened up with a little more dash and occasional glimpses of good football were witnessed. Waikaia had only a scratch team of 13 men, and were at a decided disadvantage. Those securing tries for Balfour were Bulmore (2), Fraser (2), Muir (l), and for 'Waikaia E. Hamer (penalty goal). The Band Committee met on Saturday night to consider the proposal to hold a bazaar in August. Mr Hickey said he thought that the time was not opportune for holding a bazaar. It was decided to hold it over, and it was agreed to hold a euchre tourney and -dance about the end of the month. Two new members were nominated. It was resolved to discuss at the annual meeting of the club a proposal that the shooting day on the range be altered from Saturday to Wednesday.
