FIRE BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Invercargill Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs E. B. Pilcher (in the chair), C. J. Broad and W. N. Stirling. The Superintendent, Mr F. Simpson, reported that Lome Farm, Kew and Karitane Hospitals had received their regular monthly visit of inspection on April 16, when everything was found to be in order. The hose, searchlight and standpipes ordered through Messrs Coward and Company' caine to hand during the month and opened up in splendid order. It was his intention, after due consideration to fit the searchlight on No. 1 motor in the meantime and this work was now being carried out by the staff. Owing to the effects of heat and rust it was found necessary to replace the exhaust pipe on No. 1 motor. Opportunity was taken to fit a cut-out on to the new nipe, which had increased the efficiency of this machine considerably. The Sentinel automatic fire alarm recently installed in Messrs H. and J. Smith Ltd. was now connected direct with the brigade’s switchboard. After tests by the installing engineers, which were quite satisfactory, had been carried out the superintendent accepted the keys of the transmitting cabinet. Testing and maintenance would now be carried out by’the brigade. All plant and equipment were at present in first class order. All alarm points had been regularly tested and all routine work carried out in the past month. The Town Clerk, Invercargill, wrote acknowledging receipt of a copy of the estimate of expenditure for the year ending March 31, 1931, and conveying the council’s protest against the increase in expenditure. It was decided to write to the City Council acknowledging the letter and showing the items which, were responsible for the increase. -
