AMERICAN TARIFF BILL
“RUTHLESS ENACTMENT.” FEELING IN CANADA. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Washington, May 1. Lieutenant-Colonel Woods, president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, told the United States Chamber of Commerce that the “ruthless enactment” in the Tariff Bill preventing the sale of Canadian goods in the United States was causing a sentiment of injustice to spread over lhe dominion, and the 20 per cent. loss of trade which would result from its passage was not so important as the spirit being created thereby.
The speaker then issued a warning that the American tariff would drive Canada to trade within the British Empire. Speaking of preference, he said: “It has to overcome family prejudice; yet it will grow. It will not be a growth excluding business with you or anyone else in the world, but it strengthens us year by year in our attitude towards the rest of the world.”
