QUIET MAY DAY
EUROPEAN CENTRES
COMMUNIST PROCESSION IN LONDON MOSCOW’S OBSERVANCE. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 7.10 p.m.) London, May 1. May Day passed quietly in most of the European centres. Hunger strikers have been converging on London during the past fortnight to participate in a demonstration at Hyde Park organized by Communists. The demonstrators, including Lascars and other nonEuropeans, made a procession through the singing the “Red Flag” and the "Internationale.” Among ' the numerous banners’ slogans was one borne by Red children. It read: “Down with cdning in school.” ’ In Moscow the streets were filled all day with demonstrators carrying effigies of the Pope and French and British statesmen. To-morrow has been declared a general holiday to enable the people to recover from May Day exertions. Berlin reports no disturbances, but members of the Proletarian Flying Club flew over the processions and one machine, by the irony of fate, made a forced landing in the police athletic field. Quiet prevailed in Paris, where the police made 223 precautionary arrests. A number of persons were injured in scuffles between the police and demonstrators in Czechoslovakia. In Vienna the police used their truncheons on Communists bearing seditious banners and arrested 25 persons. A bull, infuriated by the sight of red flags, dispersed a procession at Wolkowsk (Poland) near the Russian border. PARADES IN AMERICA POLICE CHARGE AT OAKLAND. FIFTY ARRESTS IN NEW YORK. (Rec. 6.55 p.m.) New York, May 1. With the exception of Oakland (California), where four parading Communists were seriously injured by a police charge, May Day demonstrations in the various cities of the United States were generally without incident. Boston reports that many children were in the parade there. There was no disorder. At Philadelphia the Town Hall was guarded by police while Communists held a demonstration nearby. Two Communists were seized in Schenectady while handing out Red literature. A few' arrests were made in Newark (New Jersey). Sporadic - fights resulting from Communists' demonstrations in various parts of New' York City resulted in 50 arrests. None of the disturbances was of considerable proportions.
