OBITUARY
MR MAURICE F. COUGHLAN.
(Special to the Times.) Dunedin, May 1.
The death occurred to-day at his residence, Salisbury, North Taieri, of Mr Maurice Francis Goughian who, as proprietor of the Provincial hotel, was well-known to the sporting communitv of Dunedin as well as to a large section of the travelling public. Mr Coughlan was born in Clashmore, County Waterford, Ireland, in 1862, and was educated at the National School in that town, the ecclesiastical seminary at Mount Mallory and Cusack’s Academy. Dublin. Accompanied by his brother, Mr W. J. Coughlan, he came to New Zealand by the steamer Ruapehu in 1884 and took up land at Fairfax, Southland, which he farmed for a few years before coming to Dunedin to take over the Grange hotel at the corner of Hanover and Leith streets. During the next few years he was successively licensee of the Prince of Wales hotel, Clinton, the Southland Club hotel, Gore, and the Crown hotel, Balclutha. He then went to Sydney, where he remained for some time, and on his return to Dunedin he and his brother took over the Shamrock Hotel at the corner of Rattray and Maclaggan streets. On Messrs Speight and Company acquiring the building, they moved to the Australasian hotel, of which they later bought the freehold and renamed it the Shamrock. After some years, the deceased leased the Provincial hotel and later acquired the freehold of this property. He then leased it to Mr H. Street ami went 1o Auckland, where he bought the Club hotel in Shortland street, but he remained in this hotel only about 12 months before selling out to take up land at Pukekohe. After he had worked this farm successfully for four or five years, it was purchased by the Government and Mr Coughlan returned to Dunedin to resume proprietorship of the Provincial hotel, where he remained until he retired from active business some years ago and bought the Salisburv estate at North Taieri.
In his younger days, the deceased was a keen volunteer and for a time he held a commission in the City Rifles. He is survived by his widow' and three sons, Messrs William J. L., Maurice, and Pearce Coughlan.
