CLIFDEN NOTES

On Wednesday, April 23, the annual ball of the Western Star I’ootball Club was held in the Orawia Public Hall. An energetic committee, headed by Mesvsrs W. Hamilton and J. Chamberlain, ably carried out the various duties. Music was supplied by Jellyman s Orchestra, while the duties of M.C. were performed by W. Hamilton. Among those present were:—Mrs Beer; Misses Chamberlain, WiLson (2), Muir, Lilly, Glen, Arthur, Fowles (2), Rohan (2), Brick, Ronalds, Austin, Moffatt, Gardiner (2), Sanford, Whyte, O’Brien, King (2) ; Messrs Wyeth, Laurie, Chamberlain (4), Brick (4), Fowlc (2), Cochran (2), Davis, Cringle, Driffie, McDowell, McLaren, Gardiner (3), Scobie (2), Mclntosh, Glen, Watson, Wilson, O’Brien, Rohan (2), Millar (2), Hamilton (2), Porter, Edginton, McGibbon, and many others.

The Anzac service was held at the Clifden Memorial. Mr S. Fowle, in a short speech, spoke of the occasion for which those present had gathered together. Mr Lion -then conducted the service by opening with the singing of the hymn, “O God Our Help in Ages Past.” After a short prayer wreaths were placed at the foot of the memorial. The service closed with the Benediction.

The annual meeting of householders was held in the Clifden School, nine householders being present. The roll number is 31 and the balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3B. The chairman, Mr C. Gardner, reported that everything was progressing favourably and that during the year a commission had been received from the Education Board and that all the requests asked for had been granted. Work which was not. carried out immediately would be done upon the next visit of the board’s carpenters to the school. A special grant of £5 5/- was also given by the commission to further the incidental account. The new committee elected for 1930 was: Messrs C. Gardner (chairman), Mr G. Duthie (secretary), Messrs S. Sanford, W. Diack and J. Mair. Mr and Mrs West arc the guests of Mr W. Diack.

Miss Wills was the. ;uest of Miss C. O’Brien, Lilburn. Mr and Mrs Smith were the guests of Mrs A. Miln.
