OUTBOARD REGATTA

THE AVENAL- FIXTURE. SOME GOOD FINISHES. Although the support accorded to the Invercargill Outboard Club’s Regatta at Avenal yesterday afternoon was somewhat disappointing, due doubtlessly to counterattractions, some good races delighted the enthusiasts who witnessed the events from all the vantage grounds at the course. A rather cold south-west wind was blowing, but conditions were fairly favourable, although in the 'last race the water was inclined to be rough. The handicapping was excellent and some close finishes resulted. Several of the boats, however, developed engine trouble and either could not compete in certain races or else were forced to retire. The following are the results of the races: TWO MILE HANDICAP. Miss Cargill—A. Hamilton (scr.) Time, 4min 55see 1 Chinook—E. Dawson (35sccs.) Time, smin 20sec 2 Miss Oreti—L. Tattersfield (osecs.) Time 4min oGsecs 3 Also stated: Aloha—Collett (scr.) The Chinook had a' good lead at the start from the other craft. The Miss Cargill was following close on the Miss Oreti, whose lead she had redded to a length at the completion of the first lap. The order then -was the same as at the start. The Miss Oreti on the bcat-up secured the inside running and forged ahead of the Miss Cargill. A splendid race on the run to the post, Miss Cargill rushing ahead to win by a length from the Chinook with Miss Oreti about half a length further behind. THREE MILE HANDICAP. Miss Cargill (scr.). Time, 7min Bsec .. 1 Aloha (25sec.). Time, 7min 33secs .. 2 Nize Baby—l. Cook (80sec.) Time, Bmin 38scc 3 Also started: Chinook (55sec.) and Miss Oreti (20sec.) The Aloha was somewhat slow in getting away. --On the beat up, the Miss Cargill reduced Miss Oreti’s lead and they were racing neck and neck at the end of the first lap,«,when the positions were: Nize Baby, Chinook, Aloha, Miss Oreti and Miss Cargill. Chinook was not making much headway on the Nize Baby but the Aloha was creeping up as was the Miss Cargill, which had now passed well ahead of the Miss Oreti. The finish of the second lap saw the positions as Nize Baby, Chinook, Aloha, Miss Cargill and Miss Oreti. A good race was now developing between the first four boats, but the Chinook now withdrew owing to water on the plugs while the Miss Oreti developed engine trouble and also had to withdraw. The Miss Cargill dashed ahead just before entering the straight and although strongly challenged by Aloha maintained her lead to win by a length, the Nize Baby being third. FOUR MILE HANDICAP. Flash—W. Hamilton (95sec.). Time, 8 min 58sec 1 Cutty Sark —H. Dunlop (40sec.) Time, Bmin 23sec 2 Also started: Miss Cargill, Aloha and Miss Oreti. The Miss Cargill had to concede nearly two minutes to the Flash, which was first away. The Miss Oreti was slow in getting away. At the finish of the first lap, the order was Flash, Cutty Sark, Miss Oreti, Aloha and Miss Cargill. Little was separating the last two boats. The Flash was maintaining her lead well and -was in first place at the finish of the second lap. Then came the Cutty Sark. Miss Oreti, Aloho and Miss Cargill. The Cutty Sark was now making up a bit of ground and the Aloha and Miss Cargill were still racing practically neck and neck. The order was unchanged right to the finish, which resulted in the Flash racing in about five lengths behind the Cutty Sark, then came, a long way behind, the Miss Cargill and Aloha (level) and the Miss Orfiti. FIVE MILE HANDICAP.

Miss Oreti (55sec). Time, 12min 26sec 1 Miss Cargill (scr.). Time, llmin 43sec 2 Also started: Flash (70sec.)

Flash got away in good style and the Miss Oreti was also dashing along well. The positions were unchanged at the end of the first and second laps, though Miss Cargill was reducing the handicap against her. The Miss Oreti was turning better and gained on the Miss Cargill in this respect. The latter, however, was creeping up well and the Flash developed engine trouble and withdrew. At the end of the fourth lap Miss Oreti was running first with Miss Cargill some distance behind. The Miss Oreti made a splendid turn into the straight and the Miss Cargill came along in fine style, but was unable to catch the winning boat.
