OUTBOARD REGATTA

ORETI RIVER FIXTURE. UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER. The weather ’conditions were somewhat unpleasant for outboarding when the Invercargill Outboard Club held a regatta at Orcti River yesterday afternoon. There was a fairly stiff south-west wind and the water was somewhat, choppy. Moreover, the strong ebb tide further militated against an excellent exhibition of the sport. At times heavy seas were shipped, the ci-aft being temporarily swamped. Nevertheless some good races were witnessed by the fair crowd which lined the banks. Some thrilling turns were enjoyed by the spectators, the boats on several occasions careering widly round the turns and throwing spray high into the air. Later, however, the wind slackened a little and the rowing events were despatched without any trouble. It was somewhat difficult, considering the elements, to arrive at a fair conclusion as to the relative capabilities of the craft, but the Aloha, just purchased from a Dunedin driver, came well up to expectations as. a particularly fast boat for she finished in all races in good time. She will be a welcome addition to the fleet and her future performances will be watched with interest. The races were despatched promptly and reflected credit on the officials. Following are the results of the events:— AWARUA HANDICAP.Two miles. First, 25/-; Second 10/-; Third 5/-. Miss Oreti (L. Tattersfield—7secs) 4mins. lOsecs 1 Aloha (N. A. D. McKenzie—7secs.) Imins. 15secs 2 Also started: Cutty Sark (H. Dunlop — 7secs), and Miss Cargill I (11. Herman). The Miss Oreti leapt ahead from a fair start, closely followed by the Cutty Sark. At the finish of the first lap, the Cutty Sark led the Aloha and Miss Orcti. Miss Cargill I turned badly at the buoy and was a fair distance behind. On the race up river again, Cutty Sark and Aloha still maintained a lead on the Miss Oreti. At the turn at the buoy, however, the Cutty Sark cavitated and the Aloha shipped a heavy sea, the Muss Oreti dashing to the lead. The latter held the advantage from the Aloha right to the post finishing some six lengths ahead of her. The Cutty Sark did not finish, the Miss Cargill I coming along .Io finish third. BLUFF HANDICAP. Three miles. First, 25/-; Second 10/-; Third, 5/-. Aloha (N. A. D. McKenzie—l2secs) smins. 49sees 1 Miss Oreti (L. Tattersfield —7secs.) Gmins 2 Also started: Cutty Sark (12secs) and Miss Cargill II (W. Hamilton, scr.). The Aloha was slightly ahead of the Cutty Sark at the start. The Miss Oreti on the down beat raced neck in neck with the Cutty Sark, but the latter beat her at the finish of the lap. The Aloha was maintaining her lead and the Oreti dashed ahead of the Cutty Sark. At the finish of the second round, the order was, Aloha, Oreti, Cutty Sark and Miss Cargill 11. This order was not altered, the Aloha being some 15 lengths ahead of Miss Oreti with Cutty Sark some 400 yards further behind. The Miss Cargill II had put in a good challenge to Cutty Sark, but she shipped a bud sea and temporarily plug trouble, which arose caused her withdrawal. SOUTHLAND HANDICAP. Four miles. First 25/-; second 10/-; third 5/-. Aloha (scr) Smins 17secs 1 Miss Oreti (ssees) Smins 27secs .... f Cutty Sark (15secs) Bmi'ns 27secs .. t dead heat. Also started: Miss Cargill II (Usees). Miss Cargill 11. and Aloha were slow getting away. The latter careered wildly just after the start, but the driver finally steadied her. The Oreti passed Miss Cargill 11. and the position at the end of the first lap was, Cutty Sark, Miss Oreti, Miss Cargill 11. and Aloha. Both the Miss Oreti and Miss Cargill 11. made fine turns. The Oreti now passed the Cutty Sark. At the turn at the finish of the second lap the Cutty Sark lost ground to the Miss Cargill 11., which made a better turn. The Miss Cargill 11. cavitated, however, and was delayed somesomewhat in consequence. The position at the finish of the second lap was Miss Oreti, Miss Cargill 11., Cutty Sark and Aloha. The Miss Oreti’s propeller fouled some seaweed and the Cutty Sark and Aloha dashed ahead of her. The Miss Cargill 11. was now lying last. The Cutty Sark dropped behind to Aloha, then followed Miss Oreti and Miss Cargill IL, and this was the position at the finish of the third lap. The Aloha maintained her lead to finish some 180 yards ahead of Miss Oreti and Cutty Sark which, in an exciting dash, finished in a dead heat. ORETI HANDICAP. Five miles. First 25/-; second 15/-; third 5/-. Aloha (scr) 9mins 46secs 1 Miss Cargill 11. (35secs) 9mins 48secs 2 Also started: Cutty Sark (25secs) and Miss Oreti (14secs). The Aloha made a bad start. At the finish of the first lap the order was the same as at the start. The Miss Oreti on the run up stream again fouled some\seaweed and, although it was ultimately cleared, the Mbs Cargill 11. was then a lap ahead of her. At the finish of the second lap the order was Miss Cargill IL, Cutty Sark and Aloha. The same order saw the finish of the third lap, though Cutty Sark was being closely hugged by the Aloha. At the finish of the fourth lap the Miss Cargill 11. was slightly ahead of the Aloha, then followed the Cutty Sark and the Miss Oreti. The Miss Cargill 11. and Cutty Sark cavitated on the turn, the Aloha reaping the advantage to win from Miss Cargill 11. by some 50 yards, the Cutty Sark being 150 yards further behind. ROWING.
