‘DIVIDED CONTROL’
MINISTERIAL COMMENT I .—■■ ARTICLES BY “MAMAKU” CRITICIZED IMPROPER INFERENCES DRAWN (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, February 6. Interviewed respecting the articles upon the subject of wild life control the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Commissioner of State Forests, stated that the deer herds had reached such proportions as to be a danger to the native flora and fauna. In the articles mentioned, improper inferences had been drawn. The Department had no knowledge of any “tentative scheme drafted by an official of the Forestry Department” nor was it invited to be represented at the conference of Acclimatization Societies in question. The articles by “Mamaku” did not originate from the State Forest Service which did not desire to replace or eliminate the Acclimatization Societies, but there were directions in which better control and co-ordination could be attained. The Minister said he strongly resented the reflections cast upon the motives of the State Forest Service, which was conscientiously administering the Act.
