FOREST FIRE
ALARMING PROPORTIONS. Melbourne, February 4. The forest fire in the Snowy River district near Orbost has assumed alarming proportions. It crossed the river and destroyed stocks of railway sleepers and the cutter’s plant, also a large area of grass. Serious bush fires threaten the grass in the Mount Wellington district. A farmer named Hayward went out to fight a bush blaze in the Black ranges near Starwell, and when he returned he found his six-roomed house burned. It is believed the outbreak was due to beeswax, which was left melting on the stove, boiling over.
