OAMARU IN DARKNESS
LACK OF ELECTRIC POWER. SHORTAGE OF WATER AGGRAVATES DIFFICULTY. (Per United Press Association.) Oamaru, February 4. Owing to a shortage of the water supply and the delay occasioned by the difficult working conditions in the erection of a new tower to convey the hydro power lines across the Waitaki river in place of the tower which collapsed last week,. North Otago is now practically without electricity, the Power Board finding it impossible to carry on with the standby set owing to the water shortage. To-night, arrangements have been made to supply power to the Public Hospital and the North Otago Times, but otherwise Oamaru is in darkness and no power is being supplied to the surrounding district, with the exception of the Awakina main line conveying electricity to the new hydro scheme there.- It is hoped to have a line across the Waitaki from the Lake Coleridge scheme late to-morrow afternoon.
