The Beauty Cabinet
(By a Woman Chemist.) The beauty cabinet plays an even more important part in the modern woman’s life than it did in the old-world days, when the preparation of beauty aids in the stillroom was a highly developed art. The cabinet should contain a simple toilet cream for indoor use, to apply before the powder. Then there should be the vanishing cream for an outdoor protection against wind, frost, and rain. Finally there must be the night cream, to repair the damage done during the day, and only to be applied when really needed. It is fatal to overload the skin with cream, as that makes it sensitive.
A few small tubes for the vanity bag should be included in the cabinet. A cream which has a powder blended with it will be found useful. Lotions are a host in themselves; one can be found for every purpose in the realms of beauty culture. Some women use lotions almost entirely in place of creams with very good results. Lotions, in the form of emulsions, are soothing and very Healing to a tender skin. A tincture of benzoin lotion should invariably find a place in the cabinet. A bottle of almond and olive oil should be included, for nothing is better for a coarse skin. Powders are of various'kinds. Theri tint of the face powder should suit the natural complexion, and the same rule applies to powder for the hands and arms. The finer the powder the better.
Fine oatmeal is a valuable addition to the cabinet, for use either when the hands have been washed or for dusting on after the bath. If bought as a simple domestic article, it should be sifted through fine white muslin to remove any rough particles that may be present. Bath crystals must find a home in the cabinet, for the face, the best water softener is a little oatmeal, an old-world remedy that cannot be beaten by any modern preparation. An eye lotion and bath and mouthwash, as well as a good tooth powder or paste, complete the equipment.
