OTAGO FAIL

PLUNKET SHIELD GAME COLLAPSE IN SIGHT Of] VICTORY, FIVE WICKETS FALL FOR 13 (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, February 3. The Plunket Shield match between Otago and Wellington was concluded on Carisbrook to-day when the home side collapsed when in sight of victory. The weather was warm and sunny and the wicket was in good order and the outfield as fast as it had been through the match. ■Wellington had six wickets down for 122 runs in the second innings when play was resumed and their innings was brought to a close before lunch, the last wicket falling when the total was at 172. This left the Otago side 258 to make to win. Five wickets had fallen in the home team’s second strike for 180 and the position looked rosy for a win with only 78 runs required and with five wickets yet to fall, but Cavanagh’s downfall was only a preface to a disaster. The colt had played a good innings for 87, but the Otago captain Alloo went out a few minutes after him and the remaining four wickets fell before 200 was reached, the innings closing for 193. Baker, Henderson and Hollings were the most effective bowlers, the first named taking five for 50, the second three for 58 and the last-named two for 18. Shepherd and Cavanagh alone made a creditable showing in the second innings for the home side. •McGirr (15) and Ward resumed Wellington’s innings this morning to the bowling of Elmes and Dunning in whose second over Ward played the ball into the slips where Elmes missed a low catch. The fieldsman atoned for his mistake, however, by bowling Ward in his next over. 126—7—0. •All Out for 172. Lamason joined McGirr but he had made only eight when Dunning clean bowled him. Newman was next man in and arrived to see McGirr reach 40 bv pulling Lemin to the boundary for four. Dunning put an end to the crack’s innings however bowling him with a yorker. 169—9 —40. For the first time, McGirr left the wicket at Carisbrook with a score less than 50. Dunning had now taken four for 53. Henderson partnered Newman who gave a difficult chance in the slips which Dunning failed to take. The innings closed when McMillan fielded a drive to cover by Newman and returned in time for Henderson to be run out. 172—10 —4. Shepherd and Knight opened Otago's second innings, the former settling down almost immediately to one of the best exhibitions of real cricket seen on the ground this season. Knight was slower than usual in getting a start and had only scored five when Shepherd reached 30 after batting for 21 minutes. Knight’s innings came to a close before he scored any more. For a batsman of his experience he made an unpardonable mistake when he put out his bat to an off ball and placed a neat catch for the visiting captain. 37 —I—s.1—5. Cavanagh joined Shepherd, who survived an appeal for l.b.w. by Baker, whom he drove for three to bring 40 up. After half an hour’s play he was treating Henderson with scant, respect and brought- 50 up after 38 minutes. Shepherd was playing delightful cricket and the runs were mounting up steadily when he skied one from Henderson in to the hands of Badcock. 62—2 —49. Henderson had taken two wickets for 26. Shepherd had monopolized the scoring while he was at the wicket and made his 49 in 48 minutes. He was quick to punish anything loose and never gave a chance. A Profitable Partnership. Elmes joined Cavanagh after lunch, the latter reaching doubles and bringing 70 up by cutting Henderson to z - the fence. The batsmen both began scoring fast and 80 followed quickly, Cavanagh reaching 20 with a brace off Henderson. Elmes brought 90 up with a four to square leg and was then disposed of by Baker, who clean bowled him, 92—4—14. Alloo partnered Cavanagh, who was well set at. this stage. Flay was stopped while an annoying rubbish fire in the adjoining section was extinguished. Cavanagh brought up the century with a couple off McGirr and, with the total at 105, Badcock replaced Baker and Cavanagh drove him to the boundary. Two balls later he pulled him to the fence again and reached 40 by driving the same bowler for three. Then he cut McGirr for two and four and brought up 120. Alloo got his third run after being at the wicket for over half an hour. In the same over Cavanagh reached 50 for an hour and a half’s batting and, at 59, gave a chance almost at the boundary where Ward missed a catch. This took the partnership score past 50 and 150 came up when Cavanagh drove Baker to the off for four. After being an hour at the wickets Alloo secured his tenth run and brought 160 up. Cavanagh’s excellent effort concluded when he was given out l.b.w. to Baker. He received an ovation on returning. 180—5—87. With five wickets yet to fall only 78 runs were required to win. Alloo went out, however, in the same way off’the first ball of Holling’s next over. 180—6—15. Dunning and Moloney carried on. Dunning made two before he was skittled by Hollings. 182—7—2. .Groves was the newcomer and arrived to see Moloney return a catch to Baker. 182—8—0. After the tea adjournment, Heenan faced Baker who clean bowled him when he had made three and Lemin and Groves were left to carry on with.the total at 188. Lemin was dropped at the boundary by Lamason, but the next ball he played in Ward's hands at the other fence. 193—10—6. The scores were: WELLINGTON. First Innings .. 283 Second Innings. VICTORIA. CENTURY TO RYDER. (Rec. 12.35 p.m.) Brisbane, February 3. In the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland, Victoria in the first innings made 313 (Ryder 168). Ryder gave a couple of difficult chances, but otherwise batted forcefully and saved his side. Bowling, Hurwood took four wickets for 88 runs, Hornibrook three for 87, Thurlow two for 50. Queensland, in the second innings, have lost two for 74 (Benstead not out 53). Queensland, in the first innings, made 80. AUSTRALIAN TEAM PLUM WARNER IMPRESSED. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, February 3. P. F. Warner in the Morning Post says he is impressed with the youth of the Australian eleven and selects an English side, the qualification for which is that none who have attained the age of 28 are to oppose them. They are Allen, Mitchell, Hammond, Larwood, Ames, Dulcepeinhji, Robins, Killick, Peebles, Crawley, Voce. The average age is 23. Thus this young England side has not four batsmen equal to Ponsford, Kippax, Bradman and Jackson. Warner says it will be admitted that Hammond is the greatest of either side and Duleepsinhji is comparable with Jackson and Bradman. England’s bowling with Voce, Robins and Peebles is definitely stronger.
