THE SCHOOLS

BREAKING-UP CEREMONIES. RIVERTON. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a large attendance at both gatherings in connection with the school break-up on Friday. The morning was devoted to the smaller children, and the afternoon to the higher standards. The Rev. C. E. P. Webb, chairman of committee, presided, and after expressing his pleasure at seeing so many present—a sure indication of the live interest taken in the school—said it had been decided to curtail the speeches, so as to enable some of the teachers to get away by the train. He (the speaker) had been chairman for seven years, and the committee had conferred an honour upon him by asking that Mrs Webb should distribute the prizes, and she had asquiesced. He was pleased to see .with them that day two gentlemen who had been actively associated with the school for some years, namely their worthy Mayor (Dr. N. G. Trotter) and Mr J. C. Thomson. The former would address them on athletics, and the latter on the benefits to be derived from a good education. Concluding the chairman complimented the Rector (Mr C. A. Caigou) and his staff on the excellence of the year's work and trusted the school would continue to progress. The Mayor said the chairman had referred to him as a picture of health and activity notwithstanding his advancing years, and he would just mention the fact that anyone wishing to keep in good health and physically fit must take a course of exercise. He (the speaker) when a boy at school had taken part in all outdoor pastimes, and to succeed in sports of all kinds one had to train to keep in good condition. He started then and ever since had devoted a certain amount-of spare time with dumb belts and other exercises. He advised them to follow all clean outdoor games, for it must bo remembered healthy children eventually became healthy men and women, and that meant a strong and vigorous nation.

Mr Thomson delivered an interesting address on education and explained what had been accomplished by pupils and ex-pupils of the Riverton District High School. In Mr Caigou they had a painstaking and obliging rector, while he was assisted by a highly trained and competent staff. He (the speaker) made a strong appeal to parents to support their own school, and went fully into what was being done in the secondary department, and said that a pupil could receive as good an education here as in any of the larger centres.. He complimented the teachers on the advancement made during the year and trusted that they and the pupils would thoroughly enjoy their well-earned holiday. Following is the prize-list:— Form VI.—N. TISBUBY Evidence of the increasing interest that is being taken in the affairs of the Tisbury School was to be found in the large attendance of parents and friends who were present at the annual break-up and prize-giv-ing ceremony on Friday, the 20th inst. The afternoon was fine and the proceedings were held on the recently acquired sports ground. It was thus possible to introduce a programme of games and sports to add to the afternoon’s merriment. Holloway, who in his opening remarks expressed pleasure at seeing such a good attendance, more especially from the districts of Motu Rimu and Awarua Plains, whose schools were recently consolidated with Tisbury. The consolidation of these schools gave every promise of being successful and as the school now had a permanent staff of capable teachers, parents could rest assured that their children’s latent abilities would be developed to the utmost.
