Invercargill-owned Flicker (6.11), may be started in Villiers Stakes at Randwick track to-day.

Star God is a pronounced fancy for the Summer Cup, £2500 (Im. 5f.) run on Thursday in Sydney.

The Gore Trotting Club’s Annual Boxing Day gathering comes up for discussion on Thursday next.

the first day of the Southland Racing Club’s Summer meeting are due on Monday, December 30.

The Thirtv-third Annual gathering of the Cattle Flat Racing Club takes place at Balfour neat Friday.

The Auckland Cup, £3OOO ( 2m.), and Railway Handicap, £1250 (6f.) will be run at Ellerslie on Thursday.

The sum of £1705 will be distributed in stakes at the Winton Trotting Clubs Annual fixture on Saturday next.

The Auckland Racing Club’s Summer meeting opens on Thursday and extends over December 30th, and January Ist and 2nd.

and trainers are reminded that Southland R.C. first day handicaps appear on December 30th, and acceptances close next day. ,

In the rush of holiday racing Wairio Jijckey Club Annual meeting nominations should not be overlooked on Monday, December 30th.

•Mr J. Hamilton, Oreti, advertises three well-bred pacing descendants of Gold Bell for sale in another column of this issue.

Very interesting light harness fixtures will be held at Gore and Ashburton on Thursday next and at Auckland on Friday.

S. Donald is the leading Maoriland trotting trainer with 17 wins, followed by R. Berry, 8; F. G. Holmes 8; W. Hughes (North Island) 7.

It will be interesting to see what the Auckland Cup favourite will be on the day, as at the present time Paquito and Prodice

Star God, who ranks as a warm fancy for the Summer Cup (Sydney) on Thursday next, is a full brother to Star Stranger and carries 8.1.

The Manawatu Racing Club’s Summer meeting will attract a number of South Islanders on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week.

As the result of consistent attention for many weeks past, the Southland Racing Club’s course proper is looking very well at present.

The entry of twenty-one for the Southland Racing Club’s Flying Handicap (6f.), on January 2nd is one of the strongest ever received in the home province.

Australian reports are to the effect that Chide was secured by a Sydney owner at 6000 guineas, and a contingency from the gelding’s first win.

Crosscountry horseman A. Youngman, has been riding and schooling Red Heather on the S.R.C. tracks prior to piloting the gelding over Wingatui battens.

Clever little light-weight, T. Webster, is making an excellent recovery from injuries sustained at the N.Z. Cup meeting and is expected to be riding again in March.

Local private trainer F. J. McKay has a lengthy string of eleven horses in work at the present time in various stages of preparation for future meetings.

Veteran mentor G. Hope has effected a considerable improvement in Zelanian of late, and there is a prospect of the Kilbroney gelding standing up to a useful preparation.

Four of the jumpers engaged at the Southland Racing Club’s Summer meeting, Taramoa, Red Heather, Gayoma and Calham, are being prepared on the local tracks.

The smart North Island two-year-old, Gesture, by Chief Ruler—Nottava, is expected to give Praise a race in the G.N. Foal Stakes, as she is claimed to stay on really well.

,At latest advice Chief Ruler heads the list of winning sires in New Zealand with £8655 to his credit, Paladin is next with £6650, then come Day Comet £4405, and Lucullus £4190.

. The English mare Celerity 11. glides over the ground so easily and pulls up undistressed like a true stayer, hence it is difficult to judge of her condition under training conditions, but she appears to be well.

The defunct Southland sire, Some Boy IV is twelfth on the list of winning Maoriland stallions at present with £2674, while his rival of the home province, Balboa, has £2203 to put him in sixteenth position.

Six of the nineteen entrants for the Invercargill Cup, Latin Quarter, Lucky Light, Money Mine, King Balboa, Queen Balboa, and Celebrity 11. are owned in Southland, and all but Money Mine are trained on the S.R.C. tracks.

It is instructive to, learn from Wingatui that Gold Tinge has been displaying indications of a return to form, as he has raced disappointingly since he ranked as a high-class youngster last season.

Although he has not had time yet to produce her at the top of her form, local trainer T. E. Pankhurst has effected marked improvement in Miss Redowa since the Winton meeting—the sister to Red Boa is a nice filly.

Indications point to Jovial, Eleanor Bolling, and Lady Winton, who are trained on the Southland Racing Club’s tracks, being visitors to Balfour on Friday next to take part in the Cattle Flat Racing Club’s fixture.

The smart Southland-owned pacer, King Pointer, who, unfortunately, contracted strangles prior to the N.Z. Trotting Cup contest, has apparently recovered, as he has been engaged at the Canterbury Park T.C.’s meeting on January Ist and 2nd.

A feature of interest to the southern public at the D.J.C. Summer meeting next week will be the installation of loud speakers to broadcast to patrons details of the running, and information regarding protests, inquiries, trains, and other matters.

The sum of £4,775 will be distributed in stakes at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Summer meeting on Thursday and Saturday, January 30th and February Ist.' The Dunedin Cup (harness), class 4.29 (2m.), will be worth £725, including a cup valued at £25.

The East Road trainer, R. McLellan, has been very busy with Attract' and Insolence of late, and both are in blooming condition, while the elderly Carnot has

made progress. If Insolence fails in future it will not be for want of condition.

F. W. Ellis has three novices in commission at present likely to be heard from in moderate company presently, viz., Some Queen, Baffin Bay, and Banner Boy. The last-named, who has improved in appearance of late, might make a useful hurdler.

The Rorke’s Drift Lodge mentor A. McKenzie, has a useful team of three to represent him on the S.R.C. tracks daily and it may be said that Birdwood, Poor Boy and Milliner are looking well. The last-named can scamper over restricted distances.

Riccarton light-weight A. H. Eastwood will command excellent, riding prospects at the A.R.G. Summer fixture, as he is to pilot Paquito in the Auckland Cup, Great Star in the Railway Handicap, and a number of candidates frpm J. T. Jamieson’s Takanini stable.

The Endeavour Lodge trainer J. A. Rowland is now keying up several maiden performers on the S.R.C. grounds, including Bachelor Boy, Cortor, Crubenmore and Anahera. The last-named Some Boy 11. mare has been moving freely of late.

Sir George Clifford’s somewhat disappointing three-year-old gelding, Semper Paratus (Winning Hit—Equipment) has been displaying marked improvement recently at Riccarton, and it is on the cards that he will lose his maiden status during the holidays.

One of the best-conditioned gallopers on the S.R.C. tracks at present is undoubtedly Coomassie and if the Some Boy 11. mare would only elect to run home truly she might win a good race shortly. Had she been handled by J. McChesney in her younger days Coomassie would probably have now ranked as a reliable galloper.

Vinegrove has been working like an improved galloper of late and - may presently race well for J. A. Rowland’s stable. The Tractor gelding promises to stay fairly well. He is not an attractive worker on the tracks, but when it comes to racing he can display a bold front.

Despite severe injuries sustained at the Winton J.C. meeting last month, Attractive Lady is coming to hand again for R. McKay. For immediate racing purposes the local trainer has Red Boa, Sentinel Lad. Jovial and Polling Day getting through good work, while Calham looks like a useful maiden hurdler in the making.

The little Australian-bred mare, Battle Maid, has built up splendidly of late and her experienced trainer, G. A. Cameron, has a right to expect her to race well shortly. So far she has only been seen to advantage over short courses, but a daughter of Nassau (imp.) should stay on, particularly as her dam, Light Action, won over extended distances. The fact that she is on ,the small side is against Battle Maid in big fields.

It is reported from the Eastern district that the Wyndham Racing Club’s track is in great order and good going is assured on January Ist, providing that climatic conditions are favourable. Local trainers state that they have never seen the track better or carrying a thicker sole of grass, which has been cut short and will be again treated before New Year's Day.&The sting is out of the ground, and the galloping surface is even throughout. Given average weather from now on till the annual meeting, the Wyndham R.C’s. efforts in expending time and labour on their track will be fully rewarded.

During the past week the Invercargill Cup candidates prepared on the S.R.C. tracks have been getting through satisfactory work in every way. King Balboa and Queen Balboa have been pleasing their trainer and the latter should benefit by racing at Wingatui next week —King Balboa thrives on lighter work than his elder sister. Latin Quarter and Lucky Light, who have been working and racing over a lengthy perior this season, are both very forward and if they should fail to score during the holiday term it will not be for want of solid condition. The latter is seen to better advantage on the training tracks owing to her eager brilliancy, but when it comes to actual racing Latin Quarter is a lion in the field, and a gelding noted for fighting on to the last gasp. When he is beaten in a struggle it is never because he has funked the issue, but because he is not good enough. Lucky Light has probably not yet been seen at her best over lengthy courses, but she will probably see out ten furlongs when called upon and in so doing keep the best of her prospective rivals going. As previously remarked, Celerity 11. is doing all that is asked of her and doing it well and, if she does not strike constitutional trouble in the meantime, the staying daughter of a stout sire should be very well on Invercargill Cup day.

The Riccarton mentor F. D. Jones, who purchased the local sire British Empire in Australia for Mr F. Holmes, states that this young stallion was secured in England by Mr P. Keith, the well-known ex-Maori-lander, who was also responsible for the buying of Night Raid for Australia to eventually become a noted sire in New Zealand. The northern trainer states that Mr Keith holds British Empire in high regard, as he expected great things of him as a racehorse, but unfortunately he met with an accident shortly after his arrival in Sydney and never raced. It is certainly a coincidence that Night Raid and British Empire were both imported from England by Mr Keith and later sold to come x to the South Island of N.Z. British Empire, like Night Raid, is a beautifully-bred horse, carrying as he does blood to be found in the pedigrees of the greatest sires in England and France, and as Night Raid has proved to be a sire of champions, the future at the stud of the Sunstar horse, British Empire, will be followed with interest.

The acceptance lists for the Winton Trotting Club’s Annual fixture on Saturday, December 28th, are published elsewhere and followers of the light harness sport will find them very satisfactory. In accordance with a promise made to owners, trainers and the general public, a draw for places at the starting post was made immediately after the closing of acceptances last evening and the result is published with the lists of competitors for whom final payments have been made.

The more forward of local trainer C. J. Dench’s pupils, Cetchela and Lady Winton, have been progressing favourably of late in their tasks on the S.R.C’s. training grounds, but they have not had the advantage of being up as long as some of their most formidable rivals. However, they have made steady advancement. Lady Winton may be given a run at the Cattle Flat fixture at the end of the incoming week.

The local sire, British Empire, as the only Sunstar horse in the South Island, has had a number of mares booked up to him for next season. Included in the bookings referred to is that of a North Island three-year-old filly who has been listed for two successive seasons as a daughter of Tractor —Killiney, by Kilbroney—Nithsevo. This prospective matron ranks as a halfsister to Charleville, by Charlemagne IL, better known as the dam of Windbag (winner of the Melbourne Cup) and Loquacious (winner of the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick, in which Night March acted as her runner-up).

The Riccarton-trained filly, Dutch Money, who is to race in the open sprint event at the Dunedin J.C’s. meeting on Thursday next, is as a swift mover, and it is evident that she is very well at present, as she put up a smart performance on her home track on Thursday morning. In a task over a grass track set at half a mile she easily accounted for her two-year-old stable companion, Tarquinius, running down the four furlongs in 48 3-ssecs. Even allowing for the fast tracks at Riccarton, this is a smart performance and may lead to the

daughter of Paper Money—Dutch Clock playing a leading role in the Federal Handicap on Boxing Day. ' WINGATUI NOTES. ‘ TRACK IMPROVED BY RAIN. THE FIELDS FOR BOXING DAY. ; -SOUTHLANDERS FAVOURED. (Special to the Times.) Dunedin, December 20. Acceptances closed to-night for the D.J.C. meeting, which takes place next week, and I the fields remaining in, though largely comt posed of Otago and Southland horses, are larger than was generally expected would be the case. The weather has been showery and unsettled of late, but these conditions cannot last forever, and all that is now required to ensure the success of the meeting is two fine days for the actual racing. The track, which was very hard, has been improved by the rain, and should now be , in good order. A field of eight remains in the Otago Handicap, and the quality is sufficiently high to ensure an interesting contest. The two Southland horses, Celerity 11. and Queen Balboa, are firmly installed as favourites in local opinion, and owing to her decisive victory in the Mosgiel Handicap at the Spring meeting, the former promises to show a fairly short price when the field is sent to the post. In the other leg of the double another Southlander in Rin Tin Tin is strongly fancied, as well as Meadow Lark and Waving Corn. Money Mine has been working well at Wingatui and should not fail at the forthcoming meetings on the score of racing condition. Black Duke has done some solid galloping without being sent on any time-making mission. He may be found at his best at the Invercargill meeting. L. T. Daly, the North Island jockey, who has taken up his quarters at Wingatui, will have a ride in every race on the opening card at Wingatui. , P. T. Hogan has arrived at Wingatui from Washdyke with Night Lad, Palmary and Water Power. J. W. Lowe has also arrived with Quantum and Glare. Both horses, who look in good shape, were allotted steady pacing this morning. NEWS FROM AUCKLAND. OFF MORNING AT ELLERSLIE. VERTIGERN A FIT HORSE. THE LATEST ARRIVALS. ASPIRING TO RUN IN BIG SPRINT. (Special to Times.) Auckland, December 20. It was an off morning at Ellerslie today, but several visiting horses were indulged in sprints on the Number Two grass track. The Cup candidate Vertigern with his Cup rider (E. Ludlow) in the saddle was dispatched over six furlongs, and wound up the last three in 39secs. The big horse looks a picture of fitness and a couple of good gallops should tune him up nicely for the two mile race next Thursday. Count Palatine and Pedestal were worked evenly and then ran home the last three furlongs together in 38 2-ssecs. Paquito was allowed to travel along for three furlongs, hitting out very pleasingly. Count Cavour and Amor strode over half a mile in 52 3-ssecs. It is on the cards that Paquito and Count Cavour will be given a long working gallop to-morrow. If Historic goes on all right in the interim, he will probably be allowed to take his chance in the Cup. He and Panther are stationed at Avondale., The latest arrivals were Shrewd, Royal Parade, White Fang, Toxeuma, Catonian, Prodice, Nassan Lady and Flying Prince. When the Riccarton trainer W. Stone arrived home from Woodville, he said that he had decided to allow Silver Paper and Aspiring to drop out of their Ellerslie engagements, but that the pair would be competing at the Manawatu fixture. However, only yesterday Stone decided on a change of plans and Aspiring is to be sent to Auckland on Saturday. Aspiring’s trainer views her prospects in next week’s big sprint in a very favourable light. He says that she will beat Silver Paper at the weights and for this reason Silver Paper will not go to Ellerslie, but will be left in at Manawatu where he will fulfil engagements on the second and third days of the meeting. Aspiring has only one engagement at Ellerslie the Railway Handicap. It is a long way to take a horse from Riccarton to Auckland for one race, but this may be taken as an indication that the connections of Aspiring do not fear the opposition in the big sprint race. After running in the Railway Handicap, Aspiring will be railed back to Awapuni where she will stay, and then go on to the Marton meeting. WINTON TROTTING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR ANNUAL MEETING. CRICKET. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. Thomson (Old Boys) has advised the selectors that he will be unable to take part in the junior match Otago v. Southland at Christmas, and McMillan (Union) now joins the team. Morgan (Marist) is 12th man. SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. Dr. Stanley Brown presided at a meeting of the executive of the Southland Cricket Association last evening, when arrangements for the forthcoming representative games were discussed. A letter was received from the New Zealand Cricket Council enclosing a request from A. H. H. Gilligan (captain of the M.C.C. team) that Wisden balls be used in the Southland-M.C.C. game.—lt was decided to comply with the request. Messrs W. A. H. Oliver and A. Driscoll were appointed umpires for the AucklandSouthland and M.C.C.-Southland games. A letter was received from Mr A. J. Hamilton, secretary of the Union Club, voicing the club’s protest at the association’s decision regarding Pooles’ application for a transfer from Appleby to Union and requesting that the protest be forwarded on to the New Zealand Cricket Council. The letter also stated that the club had forwarded a private letter to Mr P. Dalrymple (Southland’s delegate on the council) apprising him of the facts of the case. It was decided to forward the protest on and send a covering letter from the association.

AQUATICS. BOATING AND SAILING. INVERCARGILL CLUB REVIVED. Prior to the war the sport of sailing on the Invercargill Estuary was a very popular pastime. Since that time until the last couple of seasons this form of sport was practically extinct. The last two years, however, have seen a steady revival of the sport until at the present time there are some 12 or more yachts to be seen sailing on the estuary when the weather is suitable. The fleet of launches has also steadily increased. The interest shown in these branches of aquatic sport has led to the revival of the Invercargill Boating Club, and at a very enthusiastic meeting held in the club shed last evening some 30 odd members were enrolled.
