“OFF TO AUSTRALIA”

YOUNG NEW ZEALANDER’S FLIGHT. (1.45 a.m.) London, December 20. Captain R. C. Chichester, a young and wealthy New Zealander, and a former member of the Air Force, flying a Moth plane left Croydon secretly. It is stated that he intends to fly to Australia in an attempt to beat Hinkler’s record. Captain Chichester kept his intention secret beyond informing the New Zealand Air representative, but he had not hinted at such a quick departure. He unexpectedly arrived at Croydon at midnight. Only a handful of aerodrome officials saw him take off in brilliant moonlight at 3 a.m. Conditions were perfect. He shouted: “Cheerio! I’m off to Australia."
