UNEMPLOYMENT BILL

HOUSE OF COMMONS DEBATE. TWO AMENDMENTS DEFEATED. (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) London, December 4. In the House of Commons in Committee on the Unemployed Insurance Bill the Minister of Labour, Miss Bondfield, said she regretted she could not accept the amendment to pay the wives of unemployed ten shillings instead of nine shillings per week. It would cost £825,000. Mr J. Wheatley (Labour) said he believed Miss Bondfield was personally opposed to the amendment. He would regret the day women entered public life. Miss Bondfield moved the closure, which was carried by 293 votes to 168. The amendment was defeated by 229 votes to 28. Mr Baldwin and 50 Conservatives and 20 Liberals did not vote. Miss Jennie Lee (Labour) moved that the allowance for the children of unemployed be increased from two shillings to five shillings, which would cost £4,500,000 and affect 600,000 children. This was defeated by 210 votes to 37, many Liberals and Conservatives and dozens of Labour members abstaining from voting.
