ACCLIMATIZATION!

SOUTHLAND SOCIETY. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Southland Acclimatization Society was held last evening, tho president (Mr J. Robertson) presiding over the following members: Messrs John Gilkison, T. D. Pearce, J. E. Cuthill, J. W. Smith, A. Hamilton, C. F. A. Jones, S. M. Macalister, A. H. Stock, W. Excell, Eustace Russell, C. Wilson, R. Sloan, R. McKenzie, J. P. Butler, A. L. Whelham, G. F. Strang and T. S. Mackie. Mr George M. Crabbe, of Diyatalawa, Ceylon, wrote thanking the society for its cable informing him that he had drawn wapiti block number two. He expected to leave for New Zealand early in January. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that it had been decided to send Mr G. F. Yerex, inspector in the Department for the purposes of the Animals Protection and Game Act, to investigate the position as regards deer, opossum and bird life on Stewart Island.

The hon. secretary of the Southland Anglers’ Club advised that at a meeting of the executive a motion was passed that the society be asked to have a hut erected and a boat supplied for the use of anglers at the outlet of Lake Manapouri, where it was definitely stated good fishing could be obtained, but only by the use of a boat. The question whether it was worth while erecting a hut and supplying a boat at the outlet was raised by several members, who stated that fish were scarce at that particular point. After further discussion it was decided to invite representatives of the Southland Anglers’ Club to attend the society’s next meeting when their request would be again considered. With regard to the controversy on the deer menace it was stated that in February next a conference would probably be held at Christchurch or Wellington. The president was empowered to appoint a delegate from the society to attend.
