LEAGUE OF NATIONS

INVERCARGILL BRANCH OF UNION. The Invercargill Executive of the League of Nations Union met on Tuesday afternoon, when the following were present:— Mr William Macalister (president), Miss Samuel, Mrs Corkill, the Rev. J. Lawson Robinson, Messrs A. E. Featherstone, S. M. McDonald, G. R. Cooper, C. R. S. Barrett, A. R. Dunlop, Geo. Featherstone and A. J. Deaker (secretary). The president reported that the booklet recently issued by the local branch had been eagerly sought after by children from all parts of the province. Further, it had been arranged to give a series of addresses to the Borstal boys on the work of the League and the superintendent was anxious to give every assistance, with a view to having a competition amongst the boys. Mr A. E. Featherstone stated that he had visited Gore and Mataura and addressed there meetings of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. About 40 were present at each meeting and considerable interest was shown in the work of the League. A letter was received from the Dominion Secretary to the effect that representations were being made to the Director of Education to have more definite treatment given to the League of Nations in the schools of New Zealand. Mr A. E. Featherstone was appointed to examine the work, in the forthcoming competition, of the secondary schools, and Mr Dunlop that of the primary schools. It was agreed that Mr C. R. S. Barrett be added to the local executive. The meeting concluded with a short and interesting outline by Mr Dunlop of the main business accomplished at the Tenth Assembly of the League of Nations held in September of this year.
