SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Wingatui mentor S. G. Ware is Maoriland’s leading trainer with fifteen wins to credit. > Forbury Park Trotting Club Spring meeting opens on Thursday and concludes on Saturday next. The Levin R.C. and Te Kuiti R.C. meetings are due to-day, the latter concluding on Monday. Nominations for the Ashburton County Racing Club’s one-day Summer fixture are due on Monday. Chief Ruler heads the list of winning sires with £7880,. followed by Paladin (sire of Chide) £5765. Night March arrived back in New Zealand on Tuesday looking very fresh and well after his Australian campaign. Mr E. M. Russell possesses a rising yearling full brother to his smart two-year-old filly Tea Party, by Tea Tray—Eager Eyes. Quite a number of very promising pacers were seen in action at Winton this week, and all will do better later on. Mr J. J. Corry, owner of Rabbi, who was in Invercargill this week, stated that it was unlikely that he would race in the south at holiday time. When Maungamoc peeked on landing over the final fence in the Turi Steeplechase at Winton on Thursday, he recovered quickly and threw his dislodged rider back into the saddle. Sydney jockey J. Brown, who is coming to Maoriland to ride for J. Fielder’s stable at Wingatui, is a horseman of wide experience and can go to scale at 7.6. It is stated that Night March hung out on the Melbourne Stakes when beaten by High Syce and Mollison, but this has been questioned in Melbourne. When trained in Invercargill the Night Raid colt was inclined to act in this fashion. The weights for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap are due on December 4, and will attract widespread interest as some of the best horses in commission in New Zealand to-day and others recently raced in Australia are concerned. The Soldier Members’ Memorial Handicap decided at Winton on Thursday, was run at a fast gait on the day of Imin 42secs, and under the circumstances it was not surprising to find Wingatui beaten under 8.9, as her best performances have been accomplished under light imposts. Stealth ran twelve races as a two-year-old, winning twice, and as he has been kept hard at it this season, the Night Raid gelding may be feeling the effects of his exertions. His form at Winton was not correct as compared with some previous displays and a let-up may prove beneficial. It is interesting to learn that the list of Mrs M. A. Perry’s English stallion. Cockpit, is full for the season. A keen Invercargill judge of the equine tribe, who recently interviewed the 'imported horse, speaks highly of him and at the same time has a good word to say for his youthful progeny given the look-over. , Apart from the fact that she displayed pace in the early stages of her engagements ’ ,at Winton, Battle Flag raced disappointingly, but better things may happen later in the season as far as the daughter of Martian is concerned. She was a very smart youngster when prepared by J. A. Rowland here, and it is hard to believe that she has deteriorated to the extent that recent showing would indicate. The Western district owner, Mr P. Boyle, who dearly loves a good cross-country horse and also delights in springing mild surprises on an unsuspecting public, very nearly brought off one of his excusable

jokes on Thursday with the veteran performer Nyanza. This very fine jumper was stripped in great shape by his mentor, F. Langford, and very nearly succeeded in lowering the colours of the Turi Steeplechase winner'Maungamoe, more nearly, perhaps, than the great majority of lookerson realized. Nyanza had the winner hard at it to the last obstacle and to this fact may bo ascribed the pecking of Maungamoe on landing as a tiring performer. Making a great recovery, in which his jockey claims to have played a very small part, Maungamoe regained his legs and set off on his own account to complete the task in hand, but he was all out to score from Nyanza, quite apart from the fact that, he ■was handicapped by A. Youngman having lost an iron in the mishan. There was some consolation for his connections in the fact that Nyanza returned a useful second price, but the extreme joy of winning well with a rejuvenated steed was lost to Mr Boyle, who has been very patient in nursing the son of Sunny Lake back to the racecourse. A local punter is stated to have sent money to Winton on Thursday for investment per medium of a relative on Reservoir and when the commissioner returned that evening the lady handed over a totalisator ticket on a beaten pacer to the backer, remarking: “There’s your ticket, the old thing was no good!” It was subsequently discovered that Reservoir was coupled with the winner (Lady Voison), who returned a price round about quarter of a century. The southern machine contractor will probably duly honour the recently despised brief. •Interesting racing statistics published elsewhere as compiled by the writer’s understudy show that the most successful galloping trainer of the current season in Southland is the Wingatqi mentor S. G. Ware, with eight wins, while A. S. Ellis is in second place with four successes. The winning jockeys’ list is headed by -W. Cooper (Wingatui), with six successful rides, while A. Eastwood (Riccarton), comes next with five wins and L. J. Ellis is. in third berth on even terms with P. Powell (Wingatui), each having delivered three bracket earners. An unusual feature of the returns connected with the light harness division is the fact that the capable Invercargill-reinsman A. McLellan, has so far been unable to gain recognition on the list, but that will surely come later. Mr A. Louisson makes a belated confession that, after all, he did have a betting' plunge on his-good horse, Night March, for the Melbourne Cup. He invested 480 d on him at starting price—for a Christchurch friend. It may be mentioned to the controllers of various southern racing and trotting clubs that complaints have been rife of late as to the fashion in which advertisements, regulations, etc., are mixed up with the lists of horses’ mimes in race-books. Backers find it difficult enough to select winners without being perplexed by printed matter that has no relation whatever to the matter in hand, whilst those who wish to make marginal notes cannot find space at command to do so. The public pay a substantial price for their official books and they are surely entitled to a fairer deal than has been the case in several instances of late. The matter has already been commented upon by the Racing Conference and the practice condemned, but the evil is growing again. It is a short- < sighted policy, in any case, as it serves to i increase the sale of. unofficial publications s of various colours purporting to find win- < ners for, purchasers, and, thus racing and i trotting clubs are deprived of legitimate c revenue. It is up to clubs concerned to f see that the public get a clear run for f their money and at the same time pre- 11 serve their own undoubted revenue rights. H

The Waikato Times reports that'the trotting champion, Peter Bjngen, who registered a world's race record for two miles (4.18 4-5) in winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington recently for the second year in succession, is booked to visit Western Australia for the big carnival at Perth. Peter Bingen is owned by Mr Wilfred Johnstone and is trained in the local district of Te Awamutu by J. J. Kennerley. • At the settling on Night March’s Melbourne Cup, it is estimated that bookmakers paid over £lOO,OOO to backers of Mr A. Louisson’s horse. Of this total £BO,OOO was represented in the ante-post and double betting, and fully £20,000 by bets made on the course on the day of the race. , It is said that generally speaking Night March was not a very bad horse for the early straight-out pre-post operators, but he was a losing proposition for many of the layers of doubles. The performance of Snowfall in the Turi Steeplechase at Winton on Saturday was too bad to be true, as the son of Balboa could not pace it with his opponents at any. portion of the journey after the early stages, although his jumping was sure and good enough. There was evidently a screw loose somewhere, as Snowfall is a comparatively young horse as steeplechasers go and his record shows that he has won across the flat, which would be beyond the powers of several of his rivals of this week except in very moderate company. When the last mail to hand left Melbourne it had been decided to send Phar Lap to Bacchus Marsh, where he will spend a holiday of some weeks at Mr Sol Green’s Underbank estate. His owner-trainer, 11. Telford, is leaving one of his stable employee’s in charge of the son of Night Raid, who will be sent home to Sydney later to undergo his praparation for the St. Lcgers and other rich races of the autumn. After tipping Phar Lap as a “moral” for the Melbourne Cup Australian turf writers were busy after the race to find excuses for his failure. One of them says: "Perhaps the reason can be traced to that idle period at Caulfield, the first week after his arrival when he was credited by rumour with being upset and off his food. Loss of work might have thrown him back. Keen observers thought they detected something amiss with the gelding after the Derby. Phar Lap seemed to be a little more exhausted than he should have been. It was only a slight fault, but, according to them, it should not have been there.” A correspondent asks if it is not a fact that Great Bingen cut out a mile on a grass track in the North Island in 4.l6—he probably means two miles. The records show that Great Bingen has paced a mile in 2.7 3-5; one mile and'a quarter in 2.40 3-5; one mile and a half in 3.16; and two miles in 4.19 2-5. These are separate performances. The correspondent referred to has probably misquoted Great Bingen’s twelve furlong record. The times given by the writer are all race records, and if Great Bingen ever did pace two miles on the grass in 4.16 the fact has not been officially recognized. Until a few days ago Great Bingen was the world’s race record holder over two miles of 4.19 2-5, but his younger brother set new figures when he won the final of the New Zealand Trotting Cup on November 14 in 4.18 4-5. A yearling colt ranking as a full brother to the double N.Z. Grand National Steeplechase winner, Wiltshire, and owned in the same interests, was the victim of an unusual happening a few days ago. While running out in his paddock at Te Rapa he was attacked by a Jersey bull and was badly cut about the chest, five stitches having to be inserted in the wound. The Day Comet—Lady Lobelia juvenile is a particularly attractive sort looked upon as likely to develop very favourably. While, there is every hope that he will pull round, progress will .pecessarily be slow -and time alone can tell what the effect of this mishap will be as far as his racing career is concerned. It is reported that the Southland-owned pacing mare Shady Spot, has been sent to Canterbury and is now under the care of the well-known Lauriston trainer, O. E. Hooper. The six-year-old daughter of Sungod—Hallmark was on a bad mark for southern racing, but may prove useful off the front.in tighter classes in the north. RACING STATISTICS. FIGURES TO DATE.
