OBITUARY

MRS HETHERINGTON. General regret was felt in Hedgehope and the surrounding districts on Wednesday, September 25, when it was learned that Mrs. Hetherington, The Manse, Hedgehope, the wife of the esteemed minister of the district, had passed away at Invercargill. The illness of the deceased was brief, and the call was sudden and unexpected. The funeral took place on the Saturday following. The Rev. J. S. Pate, 'jho officiated, conducted a brief service in St. Andrew’s’ Presbyterian Church, South Invercargill. The service was most impressive and. the large number present testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held and also to the heart-felt sympathy towards Mr. Hetherington and family in their great loss.

Mmorial services were held throughout the Hedgehope parish on the Sunday following and were largely attended. The Rev. J. S. Pate, of Oreti, was the officiating minister. In referring to the deceased he made mention of the long association he and Mrs. Pate had had with Mr. and Mrs. Hetherington. They had been workers together under the ministry of the Rev. John Bissett in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland and had kept up the closest friendship ever since. He testified to the fine Christian character of the deceased and while their hearts were full of sorrow that day, they sorrowed not as those who had no hope but 'believing that she had gone to be with Christ. During her short period in Hedgehope, she endeared herself to all by her cheerful manner and ready sympathy. In times of sickness she was ever a willing helper. As Superintendent of the Hedgehope Sunday School, she was loved by all the children. She took a keen interest in all things pertaining to the furthering of church work, and the welfare of the community generally. For some time prior to her death, Mrs. Hetherington acted as president of the local basketball team. She leaves a husband and two sons, Messrs. G. and J. Hetherington, Wellington, and two daughters, Misses Elsie and Jean Hetherington, Hedgehope.
